So my dad was given his notice at work last week this means that he will not have a company car until he finds another job. His personal car is a 335i which he hates because the ride is too harsh for him.

He really wanted a CLS but I also suggested a 06/07 BMW 7 series as you seem to be getting a lot more car for the money.
Can anyone suggest what I should be looking for? Are they any good? They seem to sell for around the same price as a 5 series.

I found this one

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-730-7-SER...ewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item1e5a2bdc55

budget tops out at 25k but he dones not mind spending less:D

Well he should get 20/21k for his old car so he will not be putting in too much extra money.

He had a very good residency package, the lucky git will not have to worry about money ever.

How does the competition stack up in the depreciation stakes. It's all dependant on how long he envisages to keep the car for/even bothered that the car will be worth half that again in two/three years. The diesels by the looks of it seem to hold their value a lot better, would he not consider a diesel 3.0d?

Cannot fault the car mind bar it being butt ugly :D

True, they really are very ugly. the Diesel would also be fine.

He does not know how long he will keep it, if he gets another job he will get a similar standard company car, at vrey max I would say 2 years.

I think if he spends 25k now it will be worth 12/13k in 2 or 3 years but thats going to be the same as his 335i anyway.

I assume the CLS would hold its value a little better but not much. You cant get a good S-Class for that sort of money.

That sounds a bit strange to me..........handing in your notice for a job without a new job lined up?

It’s quite complicated but he managed to get a redundancy package that he just could not turn down. Finding a job for him should not be a problem and money is not really a issue.

He is very happy and is looking forward to taking some time off work. Working the hours he did would have pushed him to an early grave anyway .

CLS is a different (but IMO a nicer) car to the 7-series. The CLS is quite small, more E-Class sized, if not smaller. It feels like a large coupe to drive, i would compare it to a 6-series if anything.

Despite its lack of size i would still pick one over the BMW though unless i wanted the space, the 7-series is hardly BMW's finest creation, the CLS rides better (in comfort mode at least), and feels warmer with a more closeting nicer looking interior. It also feels far more special to drive. The 7-Series is very bland internally, ugly externally, doesn't ride well, i'd pick pretty much any of its competitors in favour of it.

As above, the 7 isn't really the best car out there.
But if i was pushed, i'd spend a lot less than £25k on one.

Thanks, this is a very useful post!

Would you go for the 350 CGI or 320 CDI?

320CDI. (I actually had one). The range in the tank is huge which is great after my petrol S-Class, the car silences the engine perfectly, and although not fast by any stretch of imagination they go perfectly well for any purpose other than drag racing. They are also extremely economical, returning up to high 30's mpg average.

Really nice cars, and going on what i sold mine for, you should surely get one easily for the budget now.

This said, you could halve the budget and still get a decent 7-Series. So that is perhaps something to bare in mind if he has just lost his job?

If he's looking at the CLS has he thought of the XF?

Might be worth considering?

I did not even think of the XF but they are quite new so it may be hard to find a good one in his price ragne but I will take a look.

XJ may be better.

Yep I know, but the car would be a lot older and with higher miles. He does not mind the extra cost.

Merc over the 7 Series imo, I can't bring myself to like the "New" shape 7 - as opposed to the e38 style....

You could 'just' about get an early XF 2.7 diesel for that yea, fantastic cars.

You could get a very nice XJ for that though of course, they look far, far better, ride better and are just much nicer places to be than the E65 7 series too. They are generally more reliable than the S-Class and ...well everyone likes a Jag :) ...hard to go wrong, your Dad need not even spend is whole budget on one, he could get a facelift so 2007-2009 (X358) loaded with kit for £25k, well it'd be a 2007 car not a 2009 obviously. Or a pre facelift (X350) like I have for a whole lot less, these ran 2003-2007.

If he fancies something with some real pace, he could even buy an X350 XJR, with the 4.2 Supercharged V8, these crack 0-62 in 5.3 seconds and only stop at 155 because the computers tells it to :) ...it's like a Gulfstream for the road, only better!
