i'd guess this. Makes sense that whenever a new "design" is started it has a new E number for reference etc which is not anything to do with model classification or anything else. If the new design never makes it, then you will never see that E number on the road.

They do, it's just that BMW fanboys prefer to use the E numbers, the same way as Jap car fanboys prefer to say S13 rather than Mk1 Nissan 200SX or R32 rather than 8th generation Nissan Skyline

which just goes to support my theory then so i wasn't talking too much balls, so logically, if they bring the X1 out next, then that would probably be an F20, then the facelift of that would be the F24 for example. Then they release a Z5, that would be F30/F31 and so on and so forth.

the X1 is E84

All manufacturers use such things.

For example, FIAT have incrementing numbers:
1st Gen Punto - 176.
2nd Gen Punto - 188.
Grande Punto - 199.

The're even in the VIN number:
ZFA***00********

ZFA = FIAT
1st batch of * = project number
2nd batch of * = incrementing batch number and car number.
