went to test drive an nice 530 sport yesterday, in good nick apart from two things, kerb rash on those lovely m paralells :( can refurb them and missing pixels on the on board computer.

looking around seems to be a common problem that isnt really fixable, is that right? if so do most people here have it, any alternatives like getting the obc to output to something else?

Which OBC panels failing? The one in the centre console, or the main one?

There's an outfit in the states who rebuild the main one, but that would leave you unable to drive the car until it was returned.

BMWNA have been replacing them @ labour cost only for people who complain loud enough.

Apparently its a design fault, which BMW have struggled to overcome, and it affects 5, 7 and X5 models. Perhaps BMW Ireland (Or would you have to deal with BMW UK?) would offer some deal to repair it. (Trading standards, not suitable for purpose bla bla bla).

Of course, the last option is to just stump up dealer prices and get the panel replaced, dunno what the price is, but in the usa your talking between 600, and 1200 dollars to get a replacement depending on the model of car. Ask a dealer how much they would charge you to repair it, and then armed with that info, see if the seller will either make the repair, lower the price, go 50/50 with you if you buy etc etc.

Missing pixels are a very common issue on the E39.

I assume that the car had High OBC instead of Low OBC? IE, you get a text display of stuff under the speedo on high OBC, but you get a Pictogram of the car showing if doors are open etc on the low OBC.

There are people who can apparently repair them for £100.

It's totally random - my Dads car has a few missing pixels on the radio display, mine has none at all.

yeah thats the one, ah well,

dunno if ill be getting it anyway they're playing hardball on price

what would a march 01 530i sport, imola red, full black leather, xenons, phone pack, 18" m paralells and 50,000 miles cost in uk?

I've never seen any UK companies that can fix them. Although there was a thread a while ago that showed the actual flaw and how to fix it, it was a bit of a bugger to say the least. I need to get my M5 one changed, luckily it's under warranty.

Fox: Is that £100 place a UK company?

"from" £200? That's a bit excessive.

It's not a particuarly long whinded task I don't think, just rather fiddly. I'd also be worried what they'd do if they ballsed one up.. pretty sure they wouldn't fork out for a new one.

my lcd for the cd etc in the center console goes loses the clock randomly on the right side.

switch it off and it comes back :p
