Did they ever do a 535i in the current shape?

Been looking at replacing my current car, saw the specs of the E90 335i and thought yes that's what I need but in the bigger bodied 5 :(

Seems that there are plenty of 535d on sale but can't bring myself round to getting this even though on paper there's not much in it between its equivalent petrol counterpart.

Nope, they do a 535i in the USA but not over here, I guess because there's very little demand for petrols full stop.

I would heartily suggest trying the 535d. I was out in a friends dad's mk3 golf gti 8v yesturday, no running problems etc. This is also what I owned just before my current tdi.

I actually found myself preferring my tdi to the golf, the power delivery in the golf is very linear, meaning that even being an 8v you really have to rag it to feel any acceleration, yet in my tdi its all where you want it to be, especially in a big saloon. You learn to live with the tractor noise and I have found in most newer cars they have been busy making diesels sound nice too :)

it's not needed in europe

the 335i is the top of the range (excl M3) for the 3 series, but in the 5 series i can't see where it would go.

the x30i has 272PS, and the 335i has 306PS
in the 5 series, you start getting V8s after the 530i. the 540i has 306PS, which is the same output as the twin turbo 335i, but with a nice big V8. and then the range topper (excl m5) in the E60 is the 550i with a 367PS 4.8 V8.

the 535i would be completely pointless

it's weird, although BMW USA has different engines in the E90 too, like a 328i..
for the sake of argument, the E90 range in north america is as follows:

328i 335i 335d

and the E60 range looks like this..

528i 535i 550i

they use the twin turbo 3.0 instead of the smaller V8

Hmm, what to do, decisions, decisions.

I want to replace my 2003 Accord Type-S and wanted something of comparable size as we are a family of 5. The E46 M3 is what I really like as it can seat 3 in the back but I think the 2 doors would kill it for me especially with the wife proclaiming that she won't ever get out to let people in the back out! Think it's her way of saying 2 doors-NO!

Not looking to spend loads say 15k-20k including whatever I get for my current car. When did the 272ps engine kick in on the 530i?

Hehe you won't get 3 people in the back of an M3 (not adults at least), 2 you can, but not 3, due to the large transmission tunnel and it's not that wide. The E46's do not have very much space in the back tbh.

The 272ps in the 530i is 2007 onwards, not sure what month though.

Hmm, don't think 20k will get me a 2007 onwards, was hoping to spend some of the bonus money I recently got but might have to keep the Accord for a bit longer in that case. :(

No demand. In the UK, people buy a diesel. The petrol could be 99p when you purchase a coffee in the dealership coffee shop and people still wouldnt ask about it. They just.. buy diesel. They dont know or care about the properties of the petrol variants.

nonsense. the UK market has exactly the same cars available as the rest of europe. the 535i is a US-only model and that's because they only have 1 V8, whereas in europe we have both the 540i and the 550i and the twin turbo 6 is unnecessary

if i had the choice of a V8 or a twin turbo 6, which both produce the same amount of power, i'd take the V8 any day

So what? I'm explaining why the 535i doesn't exist - because nobody would buy it as the vast majority of 5 Series sales are diesel. I'm suprised we've still got the V8's to be honest. The reason why the majority are diesels doesn't matter.

but the reason it doesn't exist is because of the V8, not because of bla bla bla diesel

it's the top of the range in the E90, but the E60s has V8s to follow the 6s.
a 535i is unnecessary due to other petrol engines in the range. it has nothing to do with diesels

If sufficient demand was there, it would replace the V8, especially as turbo sixes are more the future than N/A V8's for CO2 reasons.

The demand does not exist therefore BMW never bothered adjusting the engine range to suit the 3.0 twin turbo engine. Demand DOES exist in the US market, so the range was adjusted to siut. Because... I give up, you know best.
