ive got 7000 for a car (maybe a little more in two months). if i was to go the BMW route what would you guys suggest?

bear in mind ive never driven a big car before, so it would be quite an experience jumping into a big family sized car!

diesel engines last forever, right? so a 330d with high mileage would not necessary mean its gonna break?

also any audi s3 owners here, any reason why i'd choose one of these over a bmw other than it being the size im used to :D

7000 doesnt include insurance!

You won't get a 330d worth bothering with for £7,000. Better off looking at an e39 5-series if you've only got £7k to spend.

would having 9 grand make a huge difference?

Yeah that would help, but could you afford to run it? Only the older, higher mileage 330d's are available for that sort of money. Turbos and Injectors can go and will set you back a grand each if they do.

New set of tyres will set you back close to £600, insurance isn't cheap either.

He'd get a fairly nice 330d for £9000, its only the sports which really command the higher prices. Think your aiming your comments more at sports with those tyre prices etc Nick :)

Yeah, forgot to mention that - if he's after an SE, things will be a lot cheaper. Most young 'uns seem to prefer the Sport models.

2k loan will cost loads in terms of interest rate.
is there any specific reason why you are looking for a 3 series?
for your starting budget you could get a mondeo st220

how does spending an extra 4k on a better car (£11k) effect your insurance quotes?

2k would be from family member, no interest and can pay back when i like :D

to be honest i dont know *** car i want.. a BMW would be good though

Woah woah woah I think you really need to think what type of car you want, a 330d and a MR2 have nothing in common apart from the fact both have 4 wheels.

What type of car you after, sports, cruiser, conv?

Try looking at some bmw forums....lots of very helpful advice and their own for sale pages. Ususally good pointers on what to pay for cars ;)

something better than my first car (1998 fiesta zetec)

there are many many cars that are better than that.

you need to decide:

how many seats you want
how many miles you will drive
do you want a soft top

and a few other things as well tbh, then you can start to think about cars in the area that you want
