Need a little bit of help..

What different shades of Metallic black were available from BMW in 2003?

The reason I ask is that my car is sprayed in a 2003 BMW Metallic Black, but the builder can't remember the RAL code. I'm looking to have a partial respray done to correct a bit of damage and don't want to end up with a totally different black!

Can bodyshops not match it based on what's already on the car? Maybe try another bodyshop just to get the match info then take it back to your preffered sprayer. Probably not that helpful but I can imagine there's a few different shades amongst the models and production runs.
 
Can you not remember the name of the colour even if you can't remember the code?

The problem with pictures is they don't show up the small differences in colour. My old e36 for example looked almost jet black in photos, but was more of a very very dark purple/grey mix.

I'm looking to spray it myself and source the paint myself. I guess I'll have to take the car to a paint shop to get it matched but it's just a whole lot of hassle.
