BMW service question

Hi guys,

Booked the 1er in at BMW Oxford for an oil service last week as the service indicator had a couple of hundred miles left and wanted to do it in plenty of time. I was quoted £140 which seemed fair enough

Anyway I phone up today to ask if mine can be done first as I need to be back with my car by lunchtime. While I was on the phone the guy asked what mileage my car was on. I told him it was at 68k, and he asked what it was when I bought it, again told him it was 58k 10 months ago. I explained to him that the garage I bought it from claimed they did a full service on it, and they filled the service book in with the work they done. But, considering the reputation these guys have, it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do anything but an oil change, so I'm going to go ahead and have the big service done. This is my own fault really for not knowing service intervals, I was stupid and just relied on the service indicator to tell me anything like that if it needs doing.

So the guy explained I need an oil change, oil filter, oil seperator, fuel filter, air filter etc changed. And then he delivered the news that it's going to cost £342.

Ouch! Now I assume this is an Inspection 2 I'm paying for, and also does this roughly fall in line with how much I should expect to pay? I can't really get to another BMW dealership at the moment, but as long as it's not more than £50 cheaper, I'm not really fussed. My local specialist is only £20 cheaper so would rather just go with BMW for that

Cheers all

Unless things have changed since I got rid of my 1 series... it doesn't have inspection 1 and 2 but uses Conditional Based Service (CBS) system. If you go through the menu system on the dash it will show you lots of pretty pictures of different parts of your car and how long before need to service them. I got rid of mine at 62K miles so just missed out on the big service.

seems about the right price to me, just serviced my Audi at a minor 10k interval at a local garage, and it came in at just over 300 quid, oil change, filters etcs.

I can normally save about £50 on BMW servicing by supplying my own oil. They seem to charge anything from £95-£120 for oil. You can buy 8 litres (more than you need) of the exact same stuff on eBay for half that. It also leaves you some spare for topping up.

Well on the CBS it only says Oil needs changing, that's why I only booked an oil service, but apparently at 60k it needs all that other stuff changing too :(

never heard of that - My local dealer goes by the CBS but will check the other bits (pads etc) despite it saying 10k or whatever to go.

Ask them where it states all the additional items are required to be changed?

Totally agree. Usually if other items are within a few thousand miles they will ask if you want them done to save you coming back.

Some items aren't specifically mentioned in the CBS, e.g. the air filter is supposed to be done every 3rd oil change (atleast on diesel e60s), but it isn't mentioned in the on-board service schedule.

If they read the data from your key then that should have told them everything that needs doing.

Yeah that's it, he mentioned this would be the 3rd oil change so I guess what he said is right then!

Booo :(

You really don't want to leave any diesel air filter in until the 3rd oil change - mine was caked in crap!

Every 2nd oil change at the most imo

The filter in my old mondeo got so caked up about 2 months after the service where it wasn't replaced (so about 14 months after it was replaced), it got sucked up and compressed every time the turbo spun up - restricting airflow and effectively stopping the boost!
