Hi guys,

Just wondering what to look for when test driving these, whether there are any common problems and also what alternatives you would suggest as a 2 seat drop top.

Thanks.

S2000?

Im after a 2 seater convertible after christmas and Ive narrowed it down to the Z4 or the S2000.

Prefer the looks of the Z4 though and the interior looks much better.

Not sure about running costs on either though tbh.

Hi SaBBz,

I've owned my Z4 3.0 for 3 years and to be honest I'm not aware of any "major" faults to look out for. Just the normal stuff really, kerbed wheels, condition of paintwork etc.

If you have any specific questions please just post, I know there are a fair few other Z4 drivers here.

The main one would be snapped rear springs. Quite common even on low milage cars and not a problem as long as your dealer is cooperative. They should be able to replace them for free, although they may not be so willing on high milage cars.

Check the passangers side where the hood motor is, as water can collect there if the drain holes aren't cleared. This then knackers the motor for raising the top, which can be big repair bills.

The front bumper is prone to scrapes since it's low and the bonnet is longer than many people think.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

On the subject of the rear springs, are the replacements an uprated part or are they also prone to snapping? Just wondering as I will be checking if they've been replaced.

Thanks again.

Also watch out for alloy corrosion on 108's

it can usually be found on the inside of the rims and looks like big splots of bird poo!

the E46 M3 also eats rear springs, 30k is fairly normal, replaced mine with Eibach pro ones when mine went

Another thing.. Ive heard that there wont be any 09 Z4's and the new model (Z5?) will be out before next summer, possibly as early as march. Not sure how much of an instant effect this will have on the Z4's but it may be worth waiting a little longer if your not in a rush.

The last Z4 rolled off the production line in August. There won't be any more.

Yes there will - the new Z4 is out next year. It's a Coupe-Cabrio.

It is obvious that I was talking about the current model. The new model hasn't had it's name confirmed as "Z4".

Only 578 Z4M Coupes have been registered in the UK, rarer than a Z3M coupe (although there maybe less in the UK now after write-off's etc)

I hope it isn't called the Z4. Really liked how the Z3 and the Z4 had thier own names. a lot better than saying, oh Ive got the old shape SLK. Petty I know but it makes a difference in my head :p

It's rumoured to be called the Z6.

There are also rumours of BMW introducing a smaller roadster, a Z2 and a larger counterpart (Z6 or Z8/9). Whether the new model fits into place with that theory or not, I don't know. We'll just have to wait.

used to see an old Z8 parked up (now got a Z4M), didn;t realse how rare either cars till recently (dmpooles mate who owns cookies shop)
