Board and RAM for 9800X3D

I have an AIO so not worried about cooling etc, want the best bang for buck for the 9800X3D when it arrives.

I won't be doing any overclocking, may undervolt if it's straight forward.

- I'd like decent RAM, I assume EXPO, doesn't need to be mentally fast but good if you know what I mean, 2 sticks, (16*2) 32GB or (32*2) 64GB depending on price
- Motherboard - Don't fully understand this but have read how when using NVME's it can nick some of the GPU bandwidth, I'd like a board that can support at least two, ideally 3 or 4 NVME's without this happening, doesn't have to have loads of bells and whistles as I wouldn't use, couldn't give a monkeys about with or without RGB
- Motherboard -Ideally the board wouldn't be noisy either, have read how some may have fans on VRM's, I don't need this or at least would want to disable it (My AIO blows cold on the VRM's as it is)

Haven't mentioned budgets as I don't want to constrain myself, also not into setting fire to cash!

Many thanks

Just get a PCI-e riser card that will allow you to add more drives.

As for which motherboard, that’s a really open ended option and pretty much anyone of them will do.

Maybe wait for reviews of the 9800X3D though?

Hi, buying the 9800x3d due to the stupid prices hikes on the 7800 variant.

Re the board, I want simple and uncluttered, so no risers etc, currently got a 4 and 2 tb nvme installed on the board but sure I have read about nvme using gpu bandwidth

The strix seems solid but also overkill at first glance

Not fussed at all about WiFi 7 as I am hard wired and have no use case for usb 4 either

AM5 CPUs can use up to 2x M.2 slots direct from the CPU @ PCIE 5.0 with no impact on the GPU lanes, but you mainly see that with higher-end motherboards.

In theory, you should only have to share lanes if the board wants 3x PCIE 5.0 M.2 slots, but uhh, in varies in reality.

You could look at a lower-end X670E board like MSI's X670E Gaming Plus or the TUF X670E-Plus, though the TUF loses 2 of the 4 SATA ports if you use the first chipset connected M.2 slot.

Great thanks, so running with 2 nvme on a 670e has no compromise, not too fussed about sata multiple ports, 2 should be plenty given I have 6tb of nvme storage

You can normally run 3x on a B650 or B650E board with no compromise too, if you want to spend less, e.g. TUF B650-Plus just disables a PCI-E slot if you use the third M.2 and the Eagle (one of the cheapest B650 boards) doesn't appear to disable anything. But, X670E has more total lanes available, so it helps.

Thanks, great responses so far, it’s not about money as such, more about getting value out of what I have bought and my needs

If you just want a decently built board that won't have any trouble with upgrades, then I'd get the B650 or X670 Aorus Elite. The original versions were 8-layer and they have strong VRMs that perform well in thermal testing.

The B650E-F or B650E-E Strix boards are strong all-rounders and get you full PCI-E 5.0 compatibility, though the B650E-E can't offer 4x M.2 without compromise on the GPU lanes, so that's something to keep in mind.

The X670E boards I mentioned like the X670E Gaming Plus are decent enough (price/performance) and should have enough expandability for the longer-term.

Asus TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI is a steal, just over £200 with Asus cashback (which is admittedly dodgy).

8 layer PCB, decent BIOS, good temps, 4 M2s without loosing main GPU lanes.

Thank you, got the board recommendation, now some decent reliable ram to stick in it would be great :)
It is difficult to give a recommendation for the 9800X3D, because we don't know what it will be capable of and optimised for. We'd need the board to check the QVL too.

With the 7800X3D, the speed of the memory is not important (much less than the non-X3D CPUs) and I expect that to continue with the 9800X3D. I'd be very surprised if the optimal speed is any higher than 6400 too and EXPO kits are mostly for 6000 or less.

With Ryzen 7000 the general recommendation for the optimal memory OC is: 6000, C30, but you can get away with slower higher capacity memory on the X3D and you won't notice.

Alternatively, the middle ground is a 48GB kit, but do check the BIOS and/or specs has support for these modules.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £418.97 (includes delivery: £3.99)

I'm in a similar boat to the OP, and wondered what would be the main benefit of getting the ASUS board over the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard ?
Along with the 9800x3d, ultimately I'll be hoping to stick a NVidea 4090 or 5090 in it.

Nothing huge. The Asus has a PCIE 5 GPU slot and an extra M2 slot. It also has more PCIE lanes in total so can support more devices without eating in to the GPU slot's lanes.

The reason I went X670E was laziness, if at some point a GPU needs PCIE5 GPU I can just drop it in. In all honesty I'll have probably upgraded before PCIE4 x16 is a bottleneck.

Many thanks all for your input, wanting 3+ NVME with no GPU impact, decent RAM and loads of headroom I've landed on the following:

Asus TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI (Asus doing £25 cashback for doing a review and OCUk are a valid retailer)

G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo EXPO RGB 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 PC5-48000C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit

Now the wait for 9800x3D to be released

That's a pretty solid choice.

I'm using that board and I'm impressed.
