Boaty McBoatface

It was pretty lame of them, they should have stuck with the name and cashed in on all the free publicity/media attention.

What is wrong with making things fun? Some politicians/civil servants afraid of taking risks instead decide to name it after a TV presenter - while he's a nice guy that was a dull decision and a wasted opportunity to draw attention to the work of this ship.
 
I suspect that it will be referred to as Boaty by everyone for years to come and the official name will just be what's painted on the side and the paperwork.

Naming it after one of our still-alive national treasures is a pretty sensible move. You can't diss David Attenborough without look like a complete thing that rhymes with anchor.

Seems like the right answer really - a ship as important as that deserves a proper name rather than a name that came out of a load of people on the internet taking the mick - so the chosen name seems appropriate.

That said, the whole thing has raised a lot of publicity and naming one of the exploration units Boaty McBoatface seems like a good idea and far more suitable than naming the actual ship!

And who can honestly say that Sir David Attenbrough isn't a thoroughly deserving person to have a ship like this named after him?
 
The name itself is a good choice, except for the massive glaring missed opportunity, and slap in the face for everyone who bothered to vote for an amusing, inoffensive ship name which would have put smiles on people's faces for years.

Yes - use your veto to block the offensive 4-chan suggested names, but really... they got this one wrong.

How long until some wily crew gets some tins of white paint, and names her 'Boaty McBoatface' along the side in 20ft high writing? :D

not really going to happen as they likely won't try to capitalise on it in the first place
 
Sums up democracy in general doesnt it, vote for one thing. Get something else with a nod towards the thing you voted for to keep you happy.

Tbf as sensible names go attenborough is a good choice and i agree its a fitting legacy.
