Body or Lens or Both?

Just put an order down for the 100-400mm L lens.
Didn't want to regret getting something shorter.

Anyone live is Surrey? Any go to places for wildlife photography?

Great choice!

All my lenses are Canon now, but I don't have anything with 400 reach.

Shame you don't live nearer!

Thought I'd update and discuss next steps.

I've come a long way using the 100 - 400 mark 1 over the last few months. Fantastic lens for £700 however as a few posters mentioned as a wildlife/bird photographer you are constantly after more reach.

I have also realised the limitations of my 550d particularly the limited buffer and poor motion tracking as well only have 9 focal points with no quick adjustment option.

My first step therefore was to get a 7d mark 2 which I will order soon and see how I manage with the current lens.

I'm very very tempted to swap the 100-400 for a 150-600 sigma C. I did consider a 1.4 teleconverter but the 2 stop penalty will be way too much for the current lens. I'm slightly worried about any loss of image quality with the sigma - anyone have any experience with this one?

Don't get the TC, swap for the Sigma as you said. For starters, a canon TC almost certain;y won mount on the lens, which is a clear indication that you shouldn't mount a TC in the first place. The next problem is that you most liekly wont have any Autofocus, and even if you used one fo thelateta bodies that does support f/8 AF then you will fin it incredibly slow. Plus the cost in IQ is preetty big and only worth it if the lens is outresolving the sensor, which in this case it isn't

The Sigma 150-600 C is actually sharper than the Canon 100-400 over the shared focal range so you don't give up anything.

Thanks for the input. Thoughts on grey imports?
I can get the 7dm2 for £300 cheaper if I go via hdewcameras. They give you a warranty but is the saving truly worth it compared to a genuine Canon warranty.

The Canon 1.4 mark II and Mark III teleconverters both mount on the Canon 100-400 mark I and mark II.

However as you remark, some bodies don't support f/8.0 autofocus.

Would however suggest going with DP's suggestion though, Sigma 150-600 would be a better solution than the 100-400 with 1.4x converter.

That is good saving.

You really need to consider that you are giving up your warranty.
Is that worth £300?

On a camera body I went with UK stock and paid the extra.
But my body was cheaper and the saving only 150.

On my 300 f4 I went grey market as it was 30% cheaper and I'll take the chance on the warranty.

I wouldn't trust the grey market warranty at all. If you can claim its a bonus but I wouldn't rely on it. If my lens breaks I'm expecting to have to pay for any repair (or upgrade)

Ordered the 7d ii and sigma from hdew.
I called them before ordering. Their warranty is 3 years and uses a UK based canon approved repair centre. They stated their warranty matches that of the Canon manufacturers warranty. They have also said they will include a VAT receipt so everything is proper and no liabilities.

Spent some time looking at reviews. Very positive for those that required the use of the warranty.

The other bonus is that they are a brick and mortar shop around the corner from me.

Hope that helps anyone unsure of ordering from them. I saved £200.

OK, didn't know that. Nikon lenses and teleconverters are designed to allow Nikon to allow TCs only with approved lenses. there is a metal tab that prevents mounting a TC on the 80-400mm.

I've used a Canon 1.4x convertor on a 100-400. It worked and focussed on my 1D4 body, but using the centre point only. However it was slow to focus and hunted quite a bit. Might be ok for taking photos of static stuff, but fast accelerating race cars was a bit of a disaster and I quickly removed the convertor. I've since bought a mk3 convertor, but after I sold my 100-400 so didn't get a chance to try them together.

I understand that the mk2 100-400 works a lot better with a convertor attached and can track moving targets. You can hire a convertor quite cheaply to try it before buying to see how you get on with one, but might be worth hiring the Sigma lens at the same time so you can try all the combinations.
