So I've not long moved into a new house (November) and on Friday we had our first boiler service from British Gas. "Bad news" he says "its failed a leak test and I'm going to have to condemn it, I will need to cap off the gas supply."

So he proceeds to cap it off, he puts a big condemned sticker over it and hands me a fan heater pointing out its 'on the house' from British Gas..THANKSBRO

It failed on the the flue elbow? although currently its burning well there is a chance it could leak dangerous gasses into the house. The boiler is a Powermax 155 and from what I've been reading many people have the same issue.

I've had a second opinion from another gas safe engineer who is known to the family, he managed to guess why it had been condemned before I told him"

So its new boiler time! It looks like its going to be replaced with an Ideal Logic Plus 24, I've heard bad things about Ideals previous models but everyone seems to rate this particular boiler so fingers crossed. In the mean time; cold showers are not fun let me tell you.

Some say Valiant boilers are better.
But.. If you use a Worcester Accredited installer, you get a 10year warranty I think.

My plumber swears by Worcester Bosch too, won't use anything else. He was sent down to their manufacturing place and was very impressed by the way they are built and tested.

I was looking at the Worcester Bosch 24i as well, but the 5years parts and labour guarantee on the logic plus swung it for me.

Before replacing it... can it be repaired? He obviously capped it off as it was unsafe but it may still be repairable.

According to the guy trying to sell you a boiler and the other guy trying to sell you a boiler? Not saying they're definitely wrong, but how can a boiler be completely condemned just for a flue elbow?

Very true, but what else can I do? Two companies completely independent from each other say the same thing, granted both could sell me a new boiler. I can't spend too much time digging as my house is freezing!

This happened to me a few years back. BG were 'servicing' our old old boiler while I was at work. Got a call at lunchtime from a rather worried gf saying BG had condemned the boiler and switched off the gas.

When I got home and had a look, the engineer had sheered one of the bolts for the boiler housing, so it couldn't reattach and seal. Muppet. My dad fixed it, but BG then refused to come out and recertify the boiler, simply saying it had been condemned and that was that. What was worse was because BG had condemned it, no other heating company would come and turn the gas back on, even after inspecting the repair.

In the end I had to buy a new (Worcester) boiler. Still going strong thankfully.

We had our boiler replaced just last week by British Gas, a Worcester Bosch 15Ri. Both the engineers that came to install it had nothing but praise for them, and the service engineer that fixed our old boiler highly recommended them too.

The service engineer said stick to either Worcester Bosch or Valiant, but Glow Worm are okay too.

The one we had replaced by the Worcester Bosch was a Glow Worm, lasted well.
