OMG what a load of carp these Ferroli boilers are. I have been online trying to find a solution and Ferroli are getting slated big time...one stars all over the place.

Moved in to my new home end of April and it unfortunately had a Ferroli Optimax HE Plus 31C which has decided to start leaking from somewhere inside the main case.... just before Xmas!!! :(

Don't worry, I am not going to open the case as I know its against the law to do so. Hopefully got my boiler engineer coming out Monday. If it needs parts I wonder if I will be up and running for Christmas. I am scared to use the heating and hot water in case I make the leak any worse. :( Oh and top it off my wifes parents have just arrived for a 10 day stay! *rolls eyes*

Sounds like a nightmare, once sorted get signed up with some kind of plumbing cover. Mine was a new build and over the years I've saved a fortune.

Its definatally not against the law to open and work on your boiler. The only thing that is not smiled upon is to work on the gas main.

You might find that it just needs a new pipe or something needs to be tightened up. Could be a jubille clip that would cost you pennys.

Id open it up and take a look.

Had this issue on my glowworm and found out it was the loop intake valve that was leaking, simple replacement and job done.

Worth taking a look as it could save you £££'s .

if you do open it up, expect a lot of water pouring out, grab lots of towels.. it could just be a daft washer or it could be a cracked heat exchanger or even just water getting in through the flue.. has your pressure dropped ?

if you turn off the cold main does it stop ? either will indicate their being a heating leak or a hot, cold water leak within the boiler..

Wrong

its against gas safe to remove the front cover

Awaits for boiler engineer to come for him to tighten up mains going in with an adjustable and tell you its £200.

No, there are a number of things you could do which could compromise the safety of the appliance without touching the gas supply.
Opinions like this can and do get people killed.
Now that would be a **** xmas.

Surely if you're not touching the gas supply you can do what you want.

Worst advice ever. Sure mess around with the flue, it's not the gas main and Carbon monoxide isn't that dangerous.. Or take the overheat thermistor out because the boiler won't kettle itself to death and go bang without it.

Get a registered plumber out. End of.

Oh, and your right about ferroli boilers.. They are a bit pants,

I don't think removing like 2 screws and taking off the boiler cover poses any risk at all. If you don't open any sealed area or mess with a gas pipe there isn't an issue.

He could at least maybe see the source of the water and get an idea of what to expect before some "engineer" tells him some rubbish.

Hi all, thanks very much for your comments. I have a trusted boiler engineer I use and he is good and cheap so me knowing nothing about boilers I would rather have him take a look. He is coming round between 12:00 and 13:00 today. Fingers crossed its a cheap, easy repair.... the in-laws will be pleased with some hot water/shower and heating. Good job it's a mild December! ;)

I will let you know how it goes.

Do you think or do you know ?

Any water leaking in a boiler could be dribbling into the electronics which would be bad news in the long term. Best pull the cover and maybe put something under the drip if that's the only thing you do before calling the engineer.

Had a ferolli Boiler in the first new build house we moved into which did the same thing.

Turns out the outlet pipe for the condensation was set at too much of an angle so all the condensation was just running back into the boiler. We were away one weekend so came back to water everywhere in the kitchen!

LOL gass safe isn't the law it's an independent professional body, the legal requirement is that to work with gas you need to be a 'competent person' the definition of which has never been tried in court. You do how ever need to be a registered member of Gas Safe if you are working on other peoples property whether receiving money or not.

If it is illegal to remove the cover on a boiler then I break the law every year as British gas are incapable of putting the cover back on mine properly so it is easier to just do it myself when they've gone.

Incidentally I have fixed several faults on my boiler over the last decade without once having to work on gas and anyone who tells me I need a certificate and hours of training to replace a clip on temperature sensor can bog off :)
