Hi Yall :p

I'm having a new central heating system installed on monday morning.
In the quote it tells me they will remove and dispose of all old appliances including my copper tank.
Obviously copper is worth some money and i'm wanting to keep hold of this.
I've just called the installation team now and I think I may of hit a nerve asking can I have them just remove it an leave it here.
Its still my tank and I don't see what the problem is, but someone is going to get back to me this afternoon.

Does anyone know, what's the deal with this ? I'm within my right to keep this aren't I, and it shouldn't effect the price should it ?

A lot of the time they will factor in scrap value of the old parts. Funnily enough I'm getting a new boiler installed Sunday/Monday (Worcester 30cdi) and the fitter (a friend of a friend) is taking the old stuff away to sell but has given me a decent price.

They will take into account the value of any scrap and waste disposal costs when quoting for the work. It is good they state what they'll be doing up front.

Unless otherwise agreed pretty much all plumbers claim salvage rights on the copper. The less reputable will take the copper but leave any other waste.

I imagine the copper they salvage could be in the £30-£50 region.

If you had previously agreed to the quote I can see why they are not happy about the renegotiation at such short notice. If not there is no harm with pushing for the best deal :)

thing is also
ive called them twice today, the receptionist has told me on both occasions that she would get a manager to call me back to discuss, ive not received a phone call back.
she also told me the cost of removal is in the price and if they dont remove it the price will go up. WTH ? ?
so to leave my copper tank in my house i have to pay them more ?
good thing it got this on 2 year finanace as there is nothing they can to to change the price, given there is nothing in the quote saying anything about a price not to dispose of the old pipe and tank.

i dont see why they can claim rights on salvage, its not even been discussed, all they said is that they will dispose of it, im telling them there is no need too.

drain and strip it himself hahaha..

he's talking to a receptionist about plumbing, he's obviously spending a lot of money having this job done.. or else he wouldnt be talking to a 1..

they shouldnt factor in scrap, it'll just be a perk of the job for them, so they wont like you wanting to keep it.. if you want to save some money, by keeping the copper, why dont you go all out and get someone self employed..

and dont pay a massive company

It really isnt hard to strip out a system if you have the right attitude to a bit of graft :)

Shut off feed to tank, Run hot tap until it empties , Find a drain pipe on a section of heating pipes down stairs, connect a hose, open the vents on all upstairs radiators first.. then downstairs once flow slows..

When flow stops, rip every bit of pipe you can find out, (after pulling up some floorboards ofc)

Hacksaw and half a days work. simple :D

he may as well finish the whole job while he's at it..

wrong end of the stick mickie, weas talking to the receptionist about getting a manager / installer to call me to discuss the scrapping

and to be honest its not a huge amount of money, sub £2200 from a nationwide firm
you are right about they shouldnt factor in the scrap though

so back to the point, is this stuff mine or do they have a right to take it ? and charge me more not to take it ?

so you're probably only getting a boiler changed.. most self employed plumbers could do it around the 1500 mark, but you're spending 2200 and worrying about 40 quids worth of scrap..

makes no sense

no mickie, new combi boiler, new 22mm pipe, new shower installation and removal of old condensing system
and your missing my point, its MY copper pipes and tank, what gives them the right to take it and scrap it and get money from it when i can do the same ? and then have the nerve to tell me its going to cost me more if they leave MY old copper.
Money is money mate, and its better in my pocket than some other guys

they dont have a right, ive already said that, if they dont like it, they can drop the job..

they've obviously played it up, but i was pretty much right, they're swapping your old boiler with a new one, yes they're messing with some 22mm pipes but thats what it'll take to change the boiler, they arent changing the whole house..

again this shouldnt cost 2200, to swap a boiler and add a shower, work it out your self, price up the boiler and pipe and a new shower and im guessing it'll only take a day and a half, you work it out for your self how much they'll be making..

you've obviously got it in your head, you've got a good deal tho, so nothing i can say can change your mind

this was the best quote out of 7
and i needed it on finance as i dont have a spare ££££ at this moment in time
one guy wanted £4700

i just feel strongly about people getting ripped off.

So do I, I don't think i'm getting ripped off given what im getting and what im actually paying back over 2 years, I do think they had a nerve telling me its going to cost more though, and this I think is why they didnt call me back, because there is nothing in writing saying so

If its the best price then I dont see the problem, let them take it. If you are desperate to take the scrap yourself then go with someone else who will probably charge more anyway.

The scrap is yours matey, it shouldn't be factored into the price but they do have a legal thing (can't think of the word) to remove anything they take out, just tell them you want to keep the scrap and it shouldn't be a problem.

As for the price its up to you if you think its a good deal, if you're happy then go with it.
