Try making it without the ready made sauce. It'll make a huge difference.

Chop up 3 or 4 fresh tomatoes
Crush a clove of fresh garlic
Add some tomato purée
Add some herbs (basil, oregano, etc) and some salt and pepper
Add some red wine
Mix together in a blender
Simmer gently until thickens
