Bonkers batty people

Bats are pretty important to our ecosystem.

It’s a lot of money but our government wastes our money in other ideas that are actually useless so I’m not too angry about it.

So the mainline routes hurtling through the countryside don't have a "Bat" issue. Its not a waste, it should have never been a discussion.

I've no idea. I'm not the ecologist in my household, that's my partner. Who also worked on the HS2 project and had to write a report on a few badger setts (the trap footage is actually really cool), they had her out in the middle of the night in some fields with a bat detector thing and all sorts. Though she's changed projects and just works back at the Natural England office now.

Either way, I'm not upset that 100m has been spent on this compared to some of the other bits they spend money on. ymmv.

I have long thought that we need some sensible moderation on protest groups.

The problem is that every time the government want to do something, there are endless legal actions that stand in the way. To my mind, the government has the mandate of the people, and the concerns of a few people should not be allowed to challenge and override that mandate. Any challenge should come from parliament, not the courts, except in really exceptional cases.

It's all very well having an objection, but often these groups don't offer an alternative (or there is no alternative) so we end up with no progress at all.

You know, I am not sure how the law would need to be changed, but the number of challenges is just ridiculous these days. The government has it's hands tied behind it's back all the time.

Someone, somewhere, should have said that spending £100m on some frigging bats is just ridiculous.

HS2 was badly specified. They should have gone for a fast service, but instead they went for the "fastest in Europe". That meant that it had to be almost a straight line, with very gentle curves, and severely limited where it could go. From that decision onwards, it was doomed.

I have no problem paying taxes because living in a clean functioning crime free society is a benefit to me and everyone around me.

But when I see the government wastage I do not want to pay taxes frankly sometimes.

The government should have more power to do what they want to do, instead of being tied up by pressure groups.

Reminds me of the whole kittiwake fiasco with the Tyne Bridge. Having to put up "hotels" and work around breeding season and all this from a pressure / voulnteer group. They are just a plain old gull. And in fact they contribute to the problem of corrosion as well as general health issues by craping all over the place. There are apparently 380,000 breeding pairs in the UK, of which the Tyne Bridge has around 1,000. Are you telling me that without access to the bridge all those birds will just go "oh well, **** it, can't breed now". Of course not. What did they do before the bridge was even constructed lol. It's mad how silly things hold up projects.
