Bonzi Trees

We sell them sometimes in IKEA for £4.50, unfortunetely we don't get them in very often, you'd be lucky to find them there, also we only do one variety :( We d0 get some massive ones in occasionally for £45 and they sell like hot cakes.

I am a trained horticulturist and I couldn't keep mine alive. The thing terrified the life out of me, especially as my Mum bought it for me as a present. Why not plant a few acorns and conkers and start your own? But seriously, read everything you can on the subject as you will need pruning tools, copper wire, buckets of mustard and a clean set of pants every time a leaf falls off. You can get some stuff from tre'ebay but don't spend too much as you really don't know how long it will last. Most of the garden centres do the trees, dishes and compost etc. Don't get a 'Ficus' as these are not the best plants to keep at home in their proper size

Good luck

I've read 2 books on it, got the little sissors, got the plant food especially for it, I water it like it supposed to and it still died !

I had one of these, fed it tap water and it lived on my bedroom floor.

Lasted a couple of months, then the leaves fell off and it died.

My mum blamed it on me because I didnt water it enough....once a week if it was lucky.

My cousin has one, the leaves all dropped off and thought it died so he stuck it in the garage because he didn't want to throw it in the bin. He forgot all about it, six months later, he finds it in the garage, the leaves are back and the branches are reaching for the garage window. The one I got during the summer, all the leaves have dropped off, but I still water it and look after it in the hope it starts growing again.

Mine are normally fine until I forget to water them or go away for a week. I find that they like the same things that most other plants like. I don't let the soil go too dry and feed it every so often (probably due for another feed now actually). They like plenty of light, but not direct sun.

It also depends on what sort of tree you buy. Chinese Elms (ok, not proper bonsai trees, but oh well) and Serissas I've always had a lot of success with. Once I get a proper house I'll no doubt get another tree. I've got a serissa on my desk right now which is looking a bit ragged and could do with a bit of TLC, but it's still alive which is the main thing. I'm just letting it do it's thing for the moment and I might give it a trim at some stage.

I'm a little more interested in my lemon tree and my mystery citrus fruit which I've grown from a seed at the moment. I reckon it's a satsuma or a clementine, but I can't be sure! It's definitely not a lemon though.

bonsai lemon tree? Cool !

My lemon tree is rather large! I'm hoping that it'll give me some fruit in the not too distant future. My dad grew it from a seed in Italy. The other plant could be an interesting project, but I really need to get it settled in after repotting it. Some little buggers were eating both of them outside.

I've got both my bonsai and the mystery citrus inside in my room now. Hopefully my music will help them to grow too as well as the warmth.

thanks for all the advice guys, looks like there is a high death rate in these buggers! i think i shall read up some more, get me a small one learn and then go for a big mumma...

so for the record if the leaves drop off, he's dead yeah? it's not a season thing? :p

Maybe they're just suicidal? I've always loved the look of a Bonsai tree but they thats some annoying mortallity rate.

I depends on what type of tree you buy, but mostly that's true as you'll probably end up with an indoor bonsai.

Don't bother reading up too much, learning from experience is the best way. Go out and buy a cheap one (i.e. <£10) and have a good go at looking after it. If you spend £100 on your first tree you'll probably end up disappointed if it dies.
