Booked MOT too late

Quick question -

My MOT is due on Monday, but the only space the guy had i go to is on Wednesday. I wanted to know if i'm doing something illegal by driving around with no MOT for 2 days. Thanx

It's legal to drive it to the MOT station after the MOT expires, but that is about it.

Just find another mode of transport for 2 days.

Ah ok. Thanx for the replies. Somebody told me that since all MOTs are done through computer, VOSA know when somebodies MOT has expired and i'll get fined or something :confused:

I would contineu to drive. Hardly a threat, police would not worry if its only 2 days late tbh. I drove around for 2 months without MOT in the past. No, no auto fine from VOSA. If you get a **** of a copper stop you without MOT, you ll just get a small fixed fine. woohoo o and insurance is still valid.

Morally I think your ok if you check the car is ok (and you know what your doing of course), if you crash because of a defect that would have shown in the MOT then consider yourself in big trouble but the driver is still the biggest risk overall imo.

The insurance company would also sue you for damages, breach of contract, etc

Youve tried every possible MOT place you can get to? you make it sound like you phone one guy and gave up !

Your insurance is not valid, the car should not be on the road, its the same if you have no road tax, the car shouldn't be there again insurance is invalid.

When i was waiting for my insurance docs to come through so I could tax my car, I rung the insurance company to see if my policy was still valid with my car being untaxed. They said it was fine

You will find it would have been insured as long as you were not driving it and it wasn't on the public road. A car can be SORN and still insured for theft etc...just without MOT or Tax your not legaly allowed to drive the car on the road.

It's not worth the risk in my opinion. If you really want to take it to that garage then find another method of transport for the 2 days. There is no real excuse in the eyes of the law.

Your insurance is still valid, as long as the car is in a roadworthy condition. I was a week late getting my MOT done and made all the necessary enquiries. Insurance is still valid. Drive around if you want, just don't prang it.

Old wives tale. Insurance is STILL valid, deffo to third parties.

I wouldn't drive it mate. Its not worth the risk.

If you read one of my threads from a few days ago the same thing happened to me and I risked it and had a crash. So far the insurance hasn't asked for the m.o.t and the cars already in the garage getting fixed so I might have been lucky.

I've certanly learnt my lesson and will not do it again.

Doesnt make a blind bit of difference about the insurance, although if you rind an insurance company most will tell you that you are only actually insured for 3rd party when the MOT runs out, either way driving a car that you know to have an expired MOT apart from to the testing station is a chargeable offence.

Get pulled and you might find a Police Officer takes pity, but i doubt it

Have an accident and watch your insurance company try and wriggle out of it when the Police try and charge you for driving without an MOT.

Is it really worth the risk for the sake of 2 days??????

And i'd rather take it to someone i know and trust rather than some random garage out of the yellow pages close by

Here in NI there is a backlog for most MOT centres of around 2 months so you get an MOT exception letter so you can still driver your car. Is there nothing similar in the rest of the UK?

No blanket statements on whether the insurance is valid or not. It depends entirely on the contract he has with them and in fairness, the insurance company, in case of an accident as if the fault was something that would have come to light in an MOT and caused the crash, they would try to avoid the contract - whether they could or not would have to be argued in court no doubt and really, for 2 days of public/alternative transport, I would not risk it.

L Plate is right If your not going to your MOT garage and have an accident your insurance is invalid. It used to be that you still had 3rd party but i think that has been changed. It all depends on your insurance company afaik. Cops will try and pin the lack of a MOT on you.

Also you better not go through an ANPR camera as you will get a lovely letter through the post from VOSA/Cop shop or be pulled
