Hi All,

I'm currently reading Dark Tower book 5, and "Wicked Beyond Belief". Can anyone recommend me something to move onto next? I'm looking for some meaty story spread over a number of books (sci/fantasy), or a decent crime novel.

Rubbish.

The first book is passable. The second takes a downturn and the third is absolute pish.

To the OP, have you read Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant books? Excellent reads :)

Nope, might try those then.

K. J. Parker writes some quality Fantasy stuff. Has two trilogies that I know of: The Scavenger Trilogy and The Fencer Trilogy. The former is excellent and the latter after reading the first volume is also shaping up to be a gooden.

There is also Iain M Banks for sci-fi. Best of his I have read so far are in no particular order: Player of Games, Look to Windward and Excession. There are loads more too. His books can be a little daunting if you're not used to his writing but with a bit of stick it'll drag you in by your eyeballs and not let go.

If you want the ultimate story spread across more than one book... DISCWORLD :D Okay so its not one BIG story... but they aren't just random stories. Although you can read them in any order you like - I have :D

Is quoting for truth still banned?

The Thomas Covenant books are great. I can't wait until the new Runes of the Earth trilogy is finished.

I have the first but I've not kept up to date. Is the 2nd out yet?

No, not yet. Should be done over the next few years. This one has only been recently written after a gap of two decades or something after all.

Having just checked, this last series is not actually a trilogy: it's a four-book set (whatever you call that...a quatrain? a quartet?)

Ignore Gilly... His Dark Materials are great!

However, for better reading try Bernard Cornwell's Warlord trilogy, maybe book 6 and 7 of The Dark Tower and, for fun, Battlefield Earth (it's long and silly)

They really aren't. They suck awfully. They're just popular, and gain popularity through that. They're in vogue.

If 99% of people that have read them hit them with no preconceptions they'd have gone nowhere, and most people wouldn't even finish them. I was so bored towards the end of the third it took me 2 weeks to read it.

It took barely that for the Count of Monte Cristo.

I had no preconceptions sir, and I enjoyed them...

Each to their own I suppose :p

Oh! I just thought, for silly fun books, the Artemis Fowl series are enjoyable :)

*awaits Gilly's dissaproval*

Wasn't Dark Towers a kids TV series they showed in junior schools? It just poped in my head thought I'd mention it. Those shows were semi-educational but an awesome idea! Everyone was hooked and we got to see an episode each week. It was like watching Lost, 24 or Stargate but with the added plus of learning how to use grammar correctly!

Don't be a smart arse and correct my grammar anyone!

The Dark Tower is a series of 7 books written by Stephen King over a 35 year period... Most of it is DEFINITELY not kids stuff...

This has been a party political broadcast on behalf of the Dymetrie Party...

I was just saying the title of the book reminded me of the show!

Although I may be alone on this my favorite books are Otherland by Tad Williams. The whole story is 4000 pages long over 5 books. You like Stephen King so i can;t imagine big books will put you off. The series is as follows:

Otherland: City of Golden Shadow
Otherland: River Of Blue Fire
Otherland: Mountain Of Black Glass
Otherland: Sea of Silver Light

The whole story involves virtual reality and has the most memorable character I've ever come across.

For me I doubt any book will ever come close to how good these books are. I think it is a personal thing though as the reviews on "that site" are a bit hit and miss.
