Boot and BIOS problems GA-Z77-UD3H

I run W7 x64 Home Premium.

I am having boot problems which are probably due to the presence of four HDDs. The boot up routine seems to forget where the System partition is located. I have to disconnect the other three drives to boot the machine. For a while this works but if I am away for a few days, the old problem comes back when I switch on the machine.

I cannot get into the UEFI BIOS to set the boot order priority. I've always had trouble with this. It seems from reading around that I need a PS2 keyboard to use the fancy UEFI BIOS. Can that really be true in this day and age? (I'm not sure where I could get one even if I wanted to - which I don't).

If I buy a compatible Asus replacement motherboard will it 'recognize' and run my existing HDDs? I would connect the W7 system drive first, and add the others one by one. I hope to avoid reinstalling W7 with all the hassle of installing drivers, and the umpteen updates since W7 came out.

Advice please! Thanks!

cant you press f12 at gigabyte splash screen then pick the os/hdd to boot into?

you can also try a usb to ps2 adaptor for your kb,and updating to latest mb bios might help get your kb working

GA-Z77-D3H - F23 http://www.mediafire.com/?abkibb98sb28sx2 latest beta (it will reset any bios/oc settings so make a note of them before you flash ect)

Thanks.

Re. to update BIOS.

Q-Flash is the recommended method. Pressing the <END> key during the post is supposed to access the Q-Flash menu. It doesn't. Instead, the post routine continues and Windows opens.

I checked that the keyboard works in Notepad.

Re. accessing BIOS to set boot order.

Pressing <Delete> at the Gigabyte splash-screen does nothing. Pressing F12 does nothing either. The boot continues and Windows opens.

I have tried the PS2/USB adaptor for the kb but as I cannot get into the UEFI BIOS in the first place I don't know if this works or not. Apparently the kb has to be a standard PS2.

Summary

As things stand, I have a PC with the W7 System HDD connected. My data files are on three HDDs which are lying on my desk. I cannot access the BIOS, nor can I update it. Life is too short to mess around any more with this and it would help me greatly if I could know the answer to my question about substituting an Asus board.

Thanks again for your help so far.

You can also download the latest @BIOS and flash/update the BIOS through windows then see if the kb works

Your windows install won't be affected if you changed to asus mb but tbh you don't need to,the gigabyte one will work fine if you have a little patience

Thanks again, wazza300

I've had trouble with this mobo since day 1. That was nearly 3 years ago. It has never been possible to access the UEFI BIOS or any other BIOS. But, because the PC ran tolerably well most of the time, and I don't have much time to mess around with stuff, I accepted the situation.

It is only now when the machine refuses to boot when I have more than one HDD connected that I was forced to attempt to enter the BIOS to check boot order priority. Of course, I could not get in to do that.

At your suggestion I reflashed the BIOS using @BIOS but it has made no difference. Pressing <Delete> or F12 at the splash-screen does nothing at all. The boot routine continues on its merry way and opens Windows.

I have to say that a mobo manufacturer which refers to floppy disks in its @BIOS instructions does not inspire confidence. Not to mention the business with a PS2 kb.

The fact is my patience has run out! I will move over to an Asus board. It will take me a day but knowing that I can simply plug in the HDDs is reassuring. It's a pity but my confidence in Gigabyte has evaporated.

what make model kb are you using?

you could email gigabyte uk and tell them the make/model and they will usually send you a modified bios to try

but yeah if its a pain then swap to the asus board

im using a razer lycosa kb myself on a z77x up4 th board, can acess bios no trouble (you tried different usb ports on your mb? that might help)

Logitech K120.

I tried all the USBs - front and back. I even added a couple of USB 2.0 from a mobo slot.

I'm all in with this mobo!

Thanks for your help and interest, it's much appreciated.
