Boot capacity - Exec saloon vs estates

It's neat, but how does it offer the benefits of a saloon?

"The cavernous cargo area can be accessed via both the split/folding rear seat and a traditional saloon-style bootlid that, thanks to Škoda’s clever patented TwinDoor tailgate design, doubles as a large rear liftback to make un/loading easier while retaining all of the refinement benefits of a saloon."

Best of both worlds.
They are also suprisingly nimble and fun to drive for such a big car too. Sure the badge and name aren't to everyones taste, but it does sound like it could suit the OPs requirements.

That's what I'm not seeing, how it retains the refinement of a saloon. The load area is still separated by a parcel shelf and the boot lid won't add to the rigidity either. I really like them, but not seeing the point of this over a normal hatch

Have to say that I'm always a bit amused by this type of thread.
I remember my mother stuffing my sister and I (I was 14 years older than my sister) into a Datsun 120Y.
More recently, I never had that many problems getting my son and all of his gear into our E46 saloon. The replacement is a Volvo S60, which has a boot 30% bigger than the E46, and it swallows everything we need effortlessly.
Do you take the whole cotbed with you when you travel?

I guess it depends how much you go away etc. With luggage, travel cot, baby seat, stroller it pretty much fills my e46 touring. We made do with an old Mini then a mk2 Escort when I was a baby,/child but these were the times when people didn't bat an eyelid if they saw a kid asleep on a rear parcel shelf or back seat. I don't ever remember having a car seat. Everything is much safer/bulkier now.

Same.. When I was a nipper my mum drove a Reliant Scimitar and we used to go to my Gran's in it with a few day's stuff. That was me aged 5-10, my sisters who are 8 and 10 years older than me, my parents, and loads of stuff...

Just wedge it in!

Surprised by that with the E61 the boot is wide enough for our single buggy or double, no trouble at all. Can have double buggy in there and the dogs without needing to contact the rspca. Did E39 have a smaller space?

I didn't measure them to be honest, but the layout of the e39 was nowhere near as good as the e60.

I agree to an extent, but having been through it myself I now understand.

Back then there were no car seats for babies. The prams (apart from sliver cross style ones) were far smaller due to not having to conform to such excessive safety standards which have added bulk.
People now use more bottles and haul about sterilising equpment which back then wasn't the case. Ready beds add convenience at the destination but are bulk in the car. We are more likely to be taking large toys or lots of small toys. Travel cots and mattresses are now very commonly transported.

The fact is that a new parent now carries around vastly more than the equivalent new parent back then.

Whether or not this is 'progress' is another thread.

Yes this.

We have a huge isofix base + car seat, travel cot, moses basket etc. It all adds up.

Does anyone rate the 1999 Honda Civic VTI Aerodecks?
