Boot external HDD in VMWare?

Decided to pop this in Windows as It's the Windows version of VMWare I'm on about despite it being Ubuntu I'm wanting to virtualise.

I've got Ubuntu on a USB stick for occasional use and (very rarely, I'll admit) It would be handy to boot in to this within a virtual machine running from the USB. Is this actually possible? Similar to how boot camp runs on macs.

I've run Windows from a USB stick in VirtualBox - so I'm sure you can do the same in VMWare - though it ran VERY slowly!

I appreciate that wasn't the most helpful or insightful reply though

I'd be tempted to ISO it and run the ISO from the local SSD for a faster experience
