Hi
I managed to 'inherit' a dead Dell Dimension 8250 from work today and thought I'd try to get it working to use as a music server for my Squeezebox 3.
When I opened it up I found that the HDD wasn't connected (power was), so I got a cable and connected it. System booted up, but with lots of beeps, so staright onto Dell website and found the problem was.... the memory. Took it out, cleaned it up, put it back and it worked.
Until I got to the black Bios screen giving the above error message and the option to either hit F1 to continue, or F2 for setup. Setup looks okay, so I try F1. Windows (XP Pro) loads okay, about 200 processes load up (maybe the original problem...) then Norton starts and tells me it's out of date.
Then, when I try to do anything, I get the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem...."
So, it lets me log on to Windows, but then Explorer won't let me do anything, not even get into Control Panel.
Any ideas on what to do next? I have an XP Home disc I could use, so should I wipe the lot & start from scratch? Is it a damaged hard drive? I've checked the cables, but don't have another one to use....
Thanks for reading all this, any help really gratefully received. I'll have to check back on here tomorrow after work as I'm off to bed now (still recovering from NYE.... )
Cheers
