right im so lost

specs
amd xp 1900
pc chips M825LU (V7.2a)
256 pc 2100 crucial ram
20gb segate hdd
onboard sound
onboard gfx
onbaord lan
56k modem
400w qtec psu
cd rom
dvd rw

(some dogey stuff there but tis worked for 3/4 years)

i have had my friends pc to fix, was full of crap after 3/4 years of use so i decided to format it. (ntfs)

im installing xp pro sp2

formating and install went fine no problems, i installed drivers and the usual xp was running fine quick and nippy, i shut down the pc for the night.

got back from work today turned the pc on no bios bleep not display but fans were on.

i cleared the bios then booted the pc went in to bios and loaded optimal settings saved it then restarted.

post came up fine. and it carryd on to a black screen with a white blinking line at the top left this is as far as it goes.

iv checked the drive with segates diag softwate the hdd was fine but the partition failed the test so i reformated as fat32 stillthe same problem.

iv also tryed a diff hdd same problem

it lets me format and install the os on the drive so i know the pc is detecting the drive.

the only thing i can think of is the bios

any 1 have any idears for me to try im at a loss and my friend wants it back asap

thanks in advance

steve

BUMP!!

im gon try access the hdd with a knoppix disk when i get home.

only other think i can think of is flashing the bios

i know tis crap hardware but it needs to be fixed up as best as posable.

Sounds like some issue with ESD and your board.

Sounds like it could be a BIOS or PSU issue to me, have you tried stripping out everything not needed and a complete rebuild?

You could have a short on the case aswell, although unlikely it is worth trying everything.

thanks for the post

im gona borrow some parts from work ,hdd ,mem and psu and do a rebuild over the weekend.

if that does not work probs have to upgrade

update///

knoppix worked i couls see the HDD

iv tested with a diffrent HDD also a diff stick of ram and also a diffrent psu (FSP 300w)

still the same problem

my last option is to flash the bios but i have no idear how

any 1 got any links?

first you need to find out what bios the machine is using?

it will tell you at the top left hand corner of the post screen...

also which mobo is it?

3 ways of flashing a bios...either thru windows or burning the flash prog to cd and then booting from CD ROM or copying the files to a floppy and booting from floppy....

once it loads choose to flash bios to latest version...it should then restart itself...if it fails to restart it means the flash failed....
