Boot Up Problem

Parents PC sometimes boots up... sometimes refuses too. Just started happening recently.

To get it to boot up now you must no longer press the On button once, you must hold it down for about a minute, and even then sometimes it wont work - it will just start whurring for about a second then switch off again. Other times after holding it down for a minute it will boot up.

Im thinking it is a PSU problem. When the computer starts for about a second and then switches off all the fans seem to be running so i dont think its a safety feature.

Advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi, it could be faulty PSU, though very unlikely ona a fault like that or it could be a faulty switch. Have you tried swapping the power switch for the reset switch and see if the computer still refuses to boot up or you have to hold the button in.

Failing that, it could be a failing motherboard which would give those symptoms, as I had a new Asrock board once that refused to boot sometimes when I turned on and I had to sometimes press the reset button 2 - 3 times to get it.

So it is either a switch or mobo I would think and not PSU related.

I forgot to mention the power light stays on after it 'starts but switches off after a second' - like it is in standby (although i swear it flashes when its in that mode?)

There is no reset switch to swap it with, and I cant remember which pins youre meant to connect together to make it start up without one

Hi, the LED could just be a small amout of charge left in it and staying charged for that second, but sound more like a faulty mobo to me. As for the pins, look at where the power switch is plugged into the pins on the header on the mobo and touch them pins with a phillips screwdriver.

Just follow where the power switch goes to on the pin on the header, remove the switch lead and touch them 2 pins with phillips and it should start up and see if it does the same again.
