Boot Up Problem.

Hey,

This is the second time this has happened - with two different solid state drives, so I don't think they can be at fault. It's where I start up my pc, and am greeted by the message asking you to press a key to continue / enter cd etc, so naturally I go into the bios and make sure the boot order is correct...1st - ssd, but it doesn't make any difference. Eventually (I'm not really sure how), I managed to get into my desktop. The first time it happened, I couldn't get anywhere at all, so had no option other than to reinstall windows.

Is there anything you can think of as to why it might be doing this? It worked fine this morning.

If your mb has a backup bios try using that.

try reflashing the bios then setting the ssd as first boot device,sometimes the bios sticks in applying the settings

reflashing the bios cures it

I flashed the bios a while back because my 7970 wouldn't work until I updated it. My motherboard is revision 1.002 (rev. 1), and I flashed it to F21. Should I now go for the latest, F23b, or re-flash to F21?

go for the latest seeing as you flashing it anyway,can always flash back later

I don't get any trouble with bootups on my z77 gigabyte so you shouldn't either

Well, it flashed ok, though I can only get the older ssd to boot (and even that isn't 100% guaranteed); the one I want to boot just says no drive detected. I'm considering re-setting cmos, and if that doesn't work then I might try re-flashing to the earliest bios version but uninstall my graphics card & use the igp. :/

Just to clarify, my mobo manual says revision 1.002. That means revision 1.0? Therefore, I've been correct to select the bottom option in the link below?

I haven't tried different cables, though I could try a different SATA port I guess.

I've yet to try re-setting cmos, but I doubt it'll make any difference.

The other thing I could do, is to try the second bios that comes with the motherboard.

The really weird thing is that despite the original bios (F18) requiring an update (to F21) to allow me to get a picture when I installed my 7970, F18 now works fine. :confused:

try different sata cable if you have any spare and a different port

usually putting the dvd drive on sata2 ports #4 or 5 helps as its the last ports to get scanned by the bios

im running a Samsung 840 pro myself and no trouble with the boot order,look to see if theres any firmware updates for your ssd

Resetting cmos made no difference.

I don't think trying a different cable is worth it, as the M4 boots fine using the same ports / cable.

Looks like the dvd drive connected to port 5.

Just seems really weird how something can be working one minute and not the next...

Looks like a reinstall of windows is the only option, but knowing that this is the second time this has happened doesn't give me confidence for the future.

If the reinstall goes pear shaped then I can probably assume the ssd is at fault?

If the reinstall goes well, and this happens again, then it looks like a new motherboard + an external drive, too. I've never needed to save much before doing a new reinstall of windows, but recent events are swaying me towards buying an external. At this rate, I'll be backing everything up almost every day...

Well, the reinstall went fine, so I'm of the opinion that the mobo wiped the ssd (at least that's what I've seen on the web). Yeah, my M4 is tickety boo.

Btw, is backing up data via an external drive easy / quick to learn? It's something I've no experience in whatsoever.

Should be straightforward though I've never done it myself,I've always cloned the drive to a spare

Samsungs data migration tool should clone it to external hdd too

One last question...where would you start if you were me re : looking into backing up data via spare ssd / extrernal? Is there certain sites I should visit / read? I guess I need to start doing this sooner than later, since it could happen again (already happened twice). Probably need to start speccing a new mobo as well.
