Booting a Windows 7 install on different hardware

I need to get an existing drive booting on completely different hardware.

I have managed to get a VHD booting by attaching it to an IDE controller in Oracle Virtualbox, should I now just install the drivers for the new motherboard I want to be able to boot from and image it back to a physical disk?

Yes, changing IDE modes and ahci on a physical system resulted in a bsod as soon as the windows logo swooped in. 0x000007b or something.

Just to update this, after booting it into a VM, I detached the hard drive in the VM manager and re-attached it to a SATA controller, I then booted it and used Reflect to image it back to a physical drive.

Windows now boots in the replacement hardware no issue.
