Hi all. Ive had my new Western digital Caviar in my machine for a month now, been meaning to reinstall windows on it but cant get round to it because of lack of time. Also want to get rid of my failing 160GB Maxtor which XP is installed on.

Thing is guys Windows XP used to prompt me for drivers for the serial ATA HD so the OS could detect it, this was with the maxtor. All i did was load some SATA drivers off a floopy disk for the maxtor and i was away.

Just worried though since im installing on my new WD and havnt the drivers for the OS to find the Hardrive before installation of windows. Ive tried searching for drivers but no luck. Was wondering if id be prompted for drivers or not when attempting to install XP on the Desired Hard Drive?

The drivers i used to use to install XP on the Maxtor were the Silicon Image drivers, does anyone know were i can find such similar drivers to install XP on the new Western Digital SATA 2 Drive?

Thanks:)

The drivers you install are the SATA controller drivers, not the hard drive drivers.

Trying to put it in words, the driver you install (for instance pressing F6 during the first stage of the Windows installation and the specifying which controller you want to add) is an interpreter between the OS and the SATA controller.

The SATA controller itself already knows how to communicate with the hard drives you connect to it, it doesn't need any additional driver in between.

Therefore, as long as you load the appropriate driver for your SATA controller (which is exactly the same as the one you used before) it doesn't matter which hard drive you connect to it.

The hard drive doesn't require drivers. The drivers are for your motherboard chipset which detects the hard drive.

If you still have the floppy then it should still work. Or you can check Asus website for the latest SATA/RAID/AHCI drivers.
