Boots high street store CCTV incident/s

Being accused of shoplifting over the tannoy, in Boots of all places... I didn't really use the high street when I was last in the UK, but that'd be the final nail in the coffin for me. Online shopping is always the way forward. Brick and mortar doing their best to end their business.

boots must have thought the viral channel4 article would act as a deterrent itself

waitrose is still #1 for literally in your face surveillance, and, they don't boast about the control room/waterboarding - plus they have better stuff to eat, can't think of anything i'd shoplift in boots.

Our local Morrisons have just installed these. I made a point of spending 5 minutes sorting out my hair last time I was in there. I might take a razor with me next time

lol, its a blooming Trespass winter cap with fur lined ear flaps and Trespass backpack, if I look like anything it's a middle aged walker/hiker, I'm not donning an adidas cap and stripy tracksuit with a weed satchel and a vape in my hand! :p

She said the system gets triggered multiple times a day, so I was thinking they can't all be thieves, it must be quite off putting to customers if your hearing that message over the tannoy when your in there.
Trespassers will be prosecuted ...

That's kinda hilarious OP, I do wonder if you're perhaps dressed in a way that looks dodgy to them or if perhaps you have a similar face to a known shop lifter.

You're not going mad though, they do appear to have introduced some anti-shoplifter tannoy warning system, though I suspect in your last example they got a bit overly keen when using it:

In this fascinating piece, they showcase the live security systems used at Boots branches up and down the country.
Via a live broadcast, potential shoplifters are informed that they are being recorded and are warned of the consequences if they leave the store with the unpaid items.
The message that was read out at one of Boots' stores across the country was: "Put the items back and leave the store. You have been recorded. The police will be contacted."

The message seemed to work in this one particular Boots, as a teenage boy, wearing a grey hooded tracksuit, was spotted having a look at products on the shelves.

Well in any event don't think I'll be going into a boots anymore as I sadly procrastinate in the aisles trying to remember what I need to pick up or sometimes indecisive, if more stores roll this trash out I guess I'll be forced to solely shop at Amazon.

As a retail worker, we have countless CCTV cameras everywhere.

Shoplifters, IMO (and colleagues too) dress in a 'uniform'. Black, dark grey, navy with a hood up. Then carry an empty bag. Plus looked very out of place when we had temps in the mid 30s in the summer. Everyone else was wearing shorts, t-shirts, summery dresses. SLs still came in (left empty handed) as looked dressed for this current weather.

Most shoplifters steal for selling their nickages for drugs. Very little to do with unable to feed their families.

Last week, a shoplifter, tripped over his own feet as about to leave with his stolen booty and a manager grabbed hold of his bag and a customer who is a bouncer, applied his work to detain the lad until police took him away. Everytime we have a shoplifter - failed or succeeded, we put the shopping through a special screen for records. This shopping was £220. Meat, face creams and batteries.

The last time I visited Iceland in Leicester city centre, the joints of meat, steaks etc had security cases like supermarkets used for boxsets. For the frozen legs of lamb, the bone was sticking out from a hole with another security device around the bone.

Dom Joly needs a come back, he could have some serious fun with this.

I guess Boots' prefered customer is not you. Can't see how tannoy announcements won't negatively effect them if this is how they approach the average non trackie bottoms guy.

When i was in Canada 10yrs ago now i got asked to leave my bag (rucksack) at the till at the entrance, it was followed by "it'll be more comfortable". I full on laughed and said "more comfortable for you", whilst i dropped my bag. A look at the shoes and the prices then i left. It was only a small surf/skate shop. Could have made a sale still if they'd won me over with a chat about ride owned store, where i was travelling etc instead of the bag bs.

I was asked to leave my backpack with security before going into a supermarket here once. Just turned back, and went to the supermarket 5 minutes down the road. Didn't go back there as I always have a backpack with me after work, to carry laptop.
No idea how big an issue shoplifting is, but I'm sure there are plenty of others like me who just want an easy life and have given up on many stores. Guess it just comes down to which costs the business more money.

Tesco's new self serve checkout's automated voice now says:

"Thank you for shoplifting at Tesco"

Funniest one I had was in B&Q.
I went down on my bike with a rucksack, went to the item, picked it up and looked if I could get it in my bag which I could (not inside the bag, outside).
Took it to the counter, paid for it then started to put it in my bag when two Security Guards approached.
"You've got two in there we saw you put one in"
I said "Mate, I'd have to be a Master Magician to get two of them in my bag :)".
They left red faced.
