So Borderlands has a lot of fans, so i thought id check it out.

i'm nearly 20 hours into this now, and ive only really learned that there might be a vault, or some treasure, or something. and that everyone is a loony.

What are the high speed travel things for? I start a challenge or whatever and i just follow the arrow/waypoint thing, but i dont know "where" that is, so i cant use the speed travel thing, as i dont know what area i need to travel to.

I feel like ive missed the point of the game somehow.

Ive kind of been enjoying it up until now, but ive just quit a mission as i got the hump with it as there is never ending travel and i keep dying, the guns are ****, he can jump really high, and really slowly, but not onto anything useful, or over anything useful.

WTF?

I just want a game thats not irritating to play

It's basically just a slot machine where you get or hope to get better weapons and repeat the same stuff over and over.
It does have some wacky humour that if you like, the enjoyment will last longer and if you don't it will make you hate it quicker.
I definitely enjoyed the first one. The second one less so and the third probably played about 2 hours. It's all the same.

Repetition in much the same way ARPGS are.

Which one are you playing? Borderlands 2 is by far the best, particularly the Tiny Tina DLC (but only play that after you've finished the main game).

The type of game is called looter-shooter and you basically kill stuff to get better and better weapons. There are some really weird and wacky weapons and equipment around.

Its a lot better if you play coop with your mates,

This.

They were games of their time.

Borderlands was an open-world FPS loot shooter with RPG elements & an emphasis on co-op. That isn't a unique concept in 2024. There are loads of games like this. But Borderlands was the first successful game to use this formula. Back in 2009, it was a breath of fresh air. Online gaining was dominated by World of Warcraft & competitive FPS games (Call of Duty, Battlefield 2, Gears of War 2). So the light humour of Borderlands & emphasis on co-op was a nice break.

Borderlands 2 then took everything that was good about the first game & built on it. The game world was bigger. The weapon variety was far larger. The gunplay was better.

And since then, the series has taken everything that was good about Borderlands 2 and... just recycled it endlessly :(

But yeah, the TLDR is that people rave about them because they were innovative and influential games for their time. And to this day, Borderlands 2 is still one of the best loot shooters ever made. But it's far better in co-op than it is solo.

I'm playing the first game. The enhanced version.

So there is no real story to it then?

I'll stick with it a bit and play it in smaller chucks perhaps.

If you're here for the plot, you've picked the wrong series

The entire plot of the first game could be summed up in a couple of paragraphs. Personally, I'd put the first game down & play Borderlands 2 or 3 (in co-op if possible) instead. They're both technically better than the first game. The main issue with 3 is that it's mechanically very similar to 2, but with better graphics. For people who played a lot of the first two games, it felt a bit stale. Not such an issue for new players.

If you want to know the plot, then there's a detailed breakdown of the whole timeline here:

Played all BL games and enjoyed them, but 1 & 2 were played co-op with a mate which made it infinitely more enjoyable, 3 I played solo and while it was decent I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much.

So I think if you can play them co-op, the main thing about them is the random rolls of the weapons and the tongue in cheekiness of it.

87 Bazillion guns.

Its a lot better if you play coop with your mates, the film was truly awful.

As is near any multiplayer game available tbf. Ignoring the ones that used to just tack on multiplayer to tick a box, which now is the opposite it seems for some. If a game that has a full single player experience can't be enjoyed solo, then it's not a great game.

TBH 100% recall it I think it was one of the first lootbox co-op SP games - playing it solo is today is just not it.

It's a looter shooter with zany humour, there is a plot and lore but it's very thin in the first game.

It's essentially first person Diablo with guns and a silly sci-fi theme, give the second a shot by all means but it simply might not be your cup of tea. Play with the different guns, some are good and some are awful, you'll eventually find a balance for your playstyle and character/build.

You might get on better with BL3, the writing is awful but it plays very fluidly and might work for you. It was free on Epic awhile back, but I do echo that BL2 is by far the best in the series.

Played and loved BL1, BL2. So many laughs.

Started to get a bit bored with 3 and the spinoffs.

I enjoyed Wonderlands but shelved it a couple of years ago mid play through.
