bored... trying to stay awake for 24 hours, any tips?

Go on a transatlantic flight, be unable to go sleep when everyone else does and then have to wait 6 hours for a broken down coach whilst stuck out in the freezing cold, followed by another 4 hour journey in said stupid coach when it arrives finaly. Get home, then fire up PC and prepare some stuff for work the next day. You should manage over 36 hours easily that way, I did :(

Leave important university courseworks until the last minute. BAM! 24hr or 48hr marathon whether you like it or not. :p

Coffee, cold air, loud music all help to keep me awake, ive often stayed awake all night and gone into work the next day.

Keep yourself occupied is the main thing, lots of sugar and caffiene, the darkest hours are the hardest.

A little off topic but...

I know someone who needed some money once and really really wanted a new car.

So he worked 9am - 5pm in a high street electrical shop, 6pm - 9pm and then 10pm - 7am as a security guard on a building site.

He worked like that for 3 months before having to pack the other 2 jobs in and go back to his shop work, he was getting a few hours sleep in his car with the security job but still, I think its a testament to the fact that you get out of life what you put in, he had no formal qualifications apart from 2 very low gcse's and yet through sheer effort he was earning more than two doctors I know :D

Don't stay awake for 24 hours unless you're a) doing necessary school or Uni work, or b) with mates. Speaking from experience, doing it just for the hell of it is the most pointless thing you'll ever do.

But if you have to:

* don't watch TV. You'll fall asleep.
* don't lie down. You'll fall asleep.
* don't read a book. You'll fall asleep.

Music, if of suitable type and volume, can be helpful, as can computer games or anything you have to interact with. And keep the lights on.

24 hours is in fact not that difficult. Just have your normal day and don't go to bed. It's when it gets to 36 hours that it gets tricky.

Vaguely related - there was a guy a couple of years ago, who decided to live as if there were 6 days in the week and write a commentary on it on his blog. This meant that each 'day' had 28 hours, and he got up and went to bed at a different 'real' time each day. He was OK until he had to go to bed just as it got light - that finished him off.

i lost my job recently and im trying to reset my body clock so i can actually get up in the morning and go look for work... lol, not doing it just for the "fun" factor.

I'm like you in that way. After about 20 hours I just fall asleep no matter what I'm doing. Annoyingly that's usually the only way I can ever get to sleep, so I'm basically trying to operate on a 28 hour day, heh.

Have managed a full 24 hours once or twice, it's a question of keeping yourself occupied with something big and important. Browsing forums, watching tv won't help since it's all too easy to go "I'll just close my eyes for a min... zzzzzzzzz" It has to be something fascinating.

In my case the last time I managed it I was on a roll with a website I was making and got so into it that before I knew it I was at the 24 hour mark! That was a good day.

Ive got by on a couple hours sleep in a 24hr period for up to 6 months but once im home i sleep all night and day into the next day but then im fine again.
