Borging school computers

Well yeah im fairly friendly with the new school IT admin guy and could see him being up for it, not too sure about the headmaster though. Maybe If i convinced him he could get some form of good publicitity (like an article in the local paper "School supports new project for science") then it could work.

Anywho, running folding on a school network is all well and good, but the performance isn't what you'd think. You only get about 8 hours a day worth of crunching time, which even with 100 ish computers (should be 300, ill explain later) doesn't produce that much.

Not entirely true (well maybe):

Thats a school.
Active processors (within 50 days) 290

Although I think Australia is its summer holidays, so they are all likely to be off.
Anyways, ever CPU counts, just ask the school explain what folding is etc. Good luck.

But that depends on how long they are on.

the last couple of weeks of the summer hols I left all the computers on and my output more than tripled, but during term time, pcs are only on for an average of about 8 hours a day. Some are on for more, some for less.

Eight hours is better then zero. Twenty four is better then eight... but still eight > zero.

And the aircon they would need to install :p
like they give a rats ass about the school kids! the heat that the PCs would output would probably not be an issue
the ozone may be, unsure of its effects (that many PSUs running at 100%?)

In my old school the only room with aircon was the server room. The computer room was just as hot but we didn't die, the server did. So it got the aircon.

In my old school, the 'aircon' is set up to blast the heat from the server room straight out into the computer room itself :o

It's stuffed with HT P4s, so it's hot enough already.
