Now that I think of it, they missed the trick with Boris a little. We all know he's the only "persona" to save Conservatives and possibly lead them to victory next election. Cameron is as good as yesterdays ballot by now, there are no public faces, charismatic leaders to step in and take his place. Boris would do it well, but his mayoralty overlaps with next elections. Which means 2020 is the earliest for him but by that time he'll be what - over sixty? An old Etonian "buffoon" with lost charm?

On another note - how come London mayor candidates didn't wake up to paired campaigns yet? Let's imagine Boris was running with, let's say Nick Ferrari as pre-appointed Deputy Mayor inserted into assembly from some Torry stronghold - not only would Johnson-Ferrari easily wipe the floor with any potential Livingstone-Gavron combination, but would also give clean exit for Boris to go win parliament seat as leader in the last year of his mayoralty and pre elected Deputy taking his place in London.
