just thought I would post some comments on my new Bose PC setup.

After a lot of thinking, options, pricing and wondering I finally decided to stump up and go for broke!!!

Bought and installed the companion 3 on Thursday and all I can say is WOW - the sound is amazing and thats just from the crappy onboard soundcard - the E-MU will be here on Monday and I just cant wait to hear my music in full bloom.

I love listening to my music on my PC (dodnt do games) while I am working and have been without speakers for about 4 weeks having donated my previous setup to the wife's shop!!!!

At £200 for the Bose, its a bit extravagent but well worth it IMHO!

Dead easy to set up - literally plug and go and works from the analogue out on the MB!

My other options were . . .

  • Bespoke car derived system - 2 x 6x9's + a sub + an amp + a PC PSU all "Plumed" in to my pc desk
  • Some of the usual suspeacts from a well know PC retailer
  • Home Hi-Fi

In the end the SEXINESS of the Bose + QDOS + convenience + I couldnt be bothered to DIY - made up my mind.

Nothing to brag about..Bose no nothing how to build quality speakers. If you're buying a Emu soundcard why are you bothering with Bose?

What's with the two quotes above?
My PC audio system is (more or less spare bits, lower quality to other HT/Audio rigs)

X-Fi
Yamaha DSP-A592 (5.1 input) L/R pre-out to
Arcam Alpha 9
B&W 601
B&W CC6
Kef Coda 7 rears
No sub as yet. Mate has a Rel Q100E which'll probably sell but it's a bit big under the desk.

LOL!!!!

I am happy and thats all that counts!

Maybe its just cool to be anti-bose - guess you may hate iPods as well???

No, I don't like Bose because they're overpriced, over hyped, use cheap components, bad sound & build quality, under performing pap. The only people buy them are those with no idea of sound quality, housewifes, or to be cool (buy the brandname) £200 would get you a very nice 2.1 PC audio system.

And there are better DAP's than Apples also..iriver, cowon, etc.

the only reason people buy bose and apple are because of big marketing making people think its 'cool' therefor its the best. and bose...yea its a rip off so it must be good...

yup, bose are great but you can get much better performance for the same price, or much less in a lot of cases...

edit: a better quality option would be to integrate your PC into your home hi-fi, personlly I use tannoy m3 floorstanders, tannoy m1 satelites and a PDR 10" active sub.

How are Bose "great" if you can get superior sound / build for 1 quarter of it's value?

because if you read the rest of my post, the greatness comes at a price.

buying a bose HI-fi is like buying a £1500 PC from the men in purple shirts.

yes, its good, but its not as good as some systems costing much less.
for the same money, and a bit of reserch into hi-fi you can get much better.

the point I was making is yes, bose do sound good, but and its a big ****** but, Bose systems are only really worth, in tems of sound, about 50% of what you pay for them.

oh, and by the way, I did not say they were worth 25% less than thier hi-fi counterparts, however, since you raised the subject, I will say that they are probably only worth 50% if you chose your components wisely, not only that, but said component will be cheaper.

Bose make great systems, and they sound pretty good, but they are priced out of thier own league, If they knocked thier prices down by about 50% then they would be a good buy.

currently they are only bought by people who dont know any better.

They don't sound great at all, there systems aren't great. I'd rate the £4500 Bose Lifestyle similar in sound quality to my £125 Creative Labs FPS speakers. In fact the Creative drivers are of higher quality, they're treated paper cones with rubber surrounds. Build quality on the FPS cubes are higher. There is no flex in the cabinets, unlike Bose Jewels which are thin, cheap plastic.

well to honest, the only bose system ive listened to properly/for any legnth of time was the origeonal sub+5 tiny satellites, I forget what it was called, but it did sound very good at the time, this must have been a good 5 years ago.... untill the guy in the shop told me how much it was....

the point i'm making, is that they sound good in my experience, but, they are simply not worth the money... in other words you could spend the same on some really nice equipment, and have a much more versatile and better sounding system.

That's it really, they're going off the fact that they're an old household name and so people assume that they're the best. I find the same with new models of B&O's too (the older stuff is awesome :))

my god lads, harsh!

the guy only came on to say how happy he was with his buy and man if you're happy with it then ignore the rest of them.

enjoy

opinions opinions LOL!

I am WELL happy - but thanks for all the should've, would've, could've - LOL!

With limited space - the Bose does the job!

If I had more room - I would have hooked it up to my Yamaha DSP A2 + B&W DM580 floor standing (1980's) monsters.

But with a small home office - the Bose are FABULOUS IMHO and take up only about 8 square inches of space!!!!!
