hi all just a qiuck question..me boss brought an acer aspire 9800 (nice laptop) and it came with x2 100gig hard drives but they where partition with about 4 on em.he wants just one big hard drive but i told him the windows software will be on the hard drive and the drivers.

would we be in the right to phone up **** and request the origanel windows disk that tbh me boss has brought the licence for?.

most new machines allow restore disks to be created from the installed OS and the supplier will not supply windows OS disks

how would we do that ?.

it has two hard drive like i said 100gig each.
he want 200gig of space in total so we cant run them in a raid array can we?.

where do i go to make an exact copy of his windows/drivers etc.

thanks for the help in advance.

he has allready formated the drives and has put xp pro on it that he brought separetly as he wanted pro not home that came with the machine.

he made a system restore disk befor hand will that contain all the drivers for the laptop?.plus it came with other software like a tv viewing app as it has a tv card would he have lost that?.

so do i boot from that then? or install xp pro then put that disk in?.

ive just put the disk in he done and said restore but it finds no restore info on it just the software eg tv card app, camera app etc.

looks like he may have to go online and download the bits he needs.

Get a proper Windows install and use that serial number that's on the laptop, if it works.

Or do what you like, you've paid for Windows for that machine, I see no problem morally using another number from a full original XP CD.

It's the laptops manfuacter's problem if they don't include the original MS OS install CD (they used to) just saving money. bah sod them.

Delete all parititions, then create a single parition then format it. Windows setup can do all this.

A restore CD isn't a "fresh install" as it'll install other stuff older drivers etc.

ok it has two 100gig disks in raid setup he wants to 100gig drives to give hime 200gig so format on with xp on then format other with just useing it as storege?.

cheers will crack on now.

I got annoyed with my Acer laptop not coming with a proper windows, I got really scared when I formatted last...basically It allowed me to format without checking if the Windows disk I was using would actually work.

In the end I had no choice but to download a copy of Windows, just to get my legit copies working. I wish they'd just give an OEM windows!

oh, and my Acer came with a drivers CD separate

why if you had windows allready was it locked to the windows they supplied?.

its came with loads or disks for the raid setup but he dont want that and there is no option in the bios to disable it.

When I first got the laptop with Home on it, I formatted and put Pro on it. Then I tried to use a Dell Windows Disk next time I formatted...which didn't work, but it allowed me to format anyway, leaving me with no OS (at this point I thought my CD drive was messed up). So I found my original Acer XP disk and assumed it would put everything how it used to be...but it claimed a file was missing on the disk. So I downloaded an XP and now have no problems

Aye, Acer's are pretty good value for money and are nicely built machines. Recently picked up a £500 laptop for my fiancee's brother:

1.7 Centrino
1gb DDRII
80GB HDD
Wifi
15.4" CrystalBrite Screen
DVD-RAM/RW
XP Home

Runs and looks lovely. Formatted it after making a backup (annoying split HDD on FAT32) using an OEM Home disc, which worked fine with the Acer key underneath the laptop. Downloaded all the drivers, but couldn't get Acer Arcade (Media Centre). Just replaced it with Media Portal.

The only problem with not supplying a proper disk is if the HDD stops working and needs replacing you need to buy another copy of XP. Nice idea in theory but not in practice.

Would be better if they stuck a decent GPU in there. Are Dell's the only ones avalible with Geforce 7900's? There are hardly any laptops with decent GPU's.

I chose a laptop for my Dad a few years ago, it was a dell with an AMD inside. It came with both recovery disks and original CDs even though I had read that it didnt come with one.

I tried the system restore disks, as a test, and even doing simple browsing it had a stutter like I had seen in my main system when I had shared IRQs between major system hogs (whilst playing games).

The original CDs works fine though, with the drivers being downloaded and ofcourse more up to date.

As said before, if the worst comes to the worst - just download windows (either oem, retail, or pro) according to which type of "cd-key" you have.
