Bottle-necked?

I have a i7 920 d0 @ 2.67ghz Ram @ 1060Mhz . Having some issues overclocking it even using the amount of guides on here for my chip and mobo models. I just bought a MSI 280X to upgrade my 5850 and wondered how much the CPU is now bottle-necking my overall performance and and how much i would have to OC to release this? Willing to put the time and effort into OC'ing but only if it will bring me noticeable rewards.

I would also accept advise on an upgrade option if you think this is a lost cause but after reading teh thread below I assume its worth sticking with the I7 920.

Here is my benchmark if it helps

Hi, i think that your CPU is the cause for the bottleneck as the slow clock speed is not so good for games if that is what you want to do. I am not really an expert on intel CPU but i read the I7 4700k is good for the price and will greatly support your new video card. Buying a new CPU like this may also need a new motherboard to support it. As i said i am no expert but i hope i helped in some way.

Rest of my system is..

ntel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C9)
Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750HXUK)

So would need to upgrade mobo. So looking at that i am maybe loosing 10 fps tops? I play CoD and dota 2 but want to get into Star citizen and Everquest Next when they are out. I played dota 2 today and the lag was worse than with my 5850 which was odd.

So really Ocing not going to give me much?

Thank you

I'm running an i7 950 with a small OC, and it doesn't bottleneck my R9 280X. I've seen that running 99% load in games

Thanks for the replies that makes me feel like sticking with it a bit longer and wait for Intel to bring out its next batch.

Just managed to Oc to 3.33 20x166 and ram @ 1333 but my performance has now dropped by half can anyone explain what i have done wrong please?

If your score has dropped dramatically it suggests something isn't *quite* stable or is overheating.
Check your temps, if they're fine try backing off the CPU overclock slightly or giving it a hint more volts, the same with the ram (one at a time, keep the changes to a minimum)

The 920 D0 should be good for a decent bit more speed than 3.33 I'd have though, I'd expect 3.8 as a minimum to be honest assuming decent cooling. Your RAM probably has an XMP option, might be good to use it if you're new to overclocking.

do you have an after market cooler? that's really important when overclocking, 4Ghz should not be too difficult with this processor to be honest, i've had an i3 530 running at 4.2 for years. It sounds like something is overheating, perhaps you have a good cooler but it's not making good contact, or you might need a smidge more voltage as someone mentioned

Will take a look at temps and report back.

My cooler is

Corsair Hydro H50-1 High-Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/AM2/AM3)

I just removed all the dust from my case and i seem to have dropped core below 60 during blends now (they were 80-90 before the clean).

Think with that cooling i can push more than 3.33?

Thanks

yes 3.3 will be easy as you will barely have to mess with the voltage, just up the clockspeed! (bclck) (do take voltage off auto though 'wise it will use way more than it needs - think at 3.4 ghz my c0 chip which is less efficient is at 1.23v) a bit of messing around you should get at least 3.8. 4.0 can be done most of the time but may be a bit harder. my 920 doesnt even bottlneck my 290 by any significant amount!
