I have a AMD Phenom X6 1090t black edition cpu, OC'd to 4ghz, would that bottle neck a r9 290?

I didn't think it would, but the the CPU is starting to get a little old, so wanted to get another persons opinion on it.

Also, there's something that's been confusing me, might be related, since I got the r9 290, when I run certain games, they refuse to go beyond 60fps (one of the games being skyrim) and the gpu will downclock itself, in order to maintain 60fps, but in some games, it will stay at the the max clock.
 
Yes it would, though the bottleneck would be minimal in any Mantle capable games. Currently only Battlefield 4 and Thief, with Sniper Elite 3 and Plants Vs Zombies releasing in a few weeks time.

For Skyrim the CPU is definitely the bottleneck:

The behavior you seeing with the 290 downclocking itself is a power-saving feature, as for example if the CPU is holding back the frame rate down to 30fps, the GPU would downclock to provide just the right amount of GPU grunt to match requirement of delivery of that frame rate, thus reduce power usage and heat/temp.

Yes. :cool: My first time playing it. It looks like devilishly good fun i have to say. Got it via a cd key site on a pre-order special for £10 as well. :cool:
 
It's the only game I find myself playing on that big black box they call the Xbox One.

May be worth purchasing it a 2nd time if I can find it for £10.

I'm running a 290 with a 1090T @ 4.175Ghz

It depends on the game

BF4 and Thief, no. not even a little as they run Mantle, you get much better performance than an i7 in DirectX.

Other games:
Crysis3 in single player, no. in Multilayer, Yes.

Games like Skyrim, WoW, yes

MMO's like Planet Side 2, yes
Warface, no

Dirt Showdown, Grid 2. No...

Its usually badly coded or old games or when there are a lot of players on a MP server where the CPU is lacking.

But it doesn't always bottleneck, i have a whole bench of games where the GPU runs at 100% with Frame Rates that are off the planet.
 
Thanks for the help everyone, I have one more question, would and 8350 overclocked to say 4.8-5ghz bottleneck the r9 290, if I were to get it and OC it, cooling would not be an issue as I currently have an h100i. Was looking into an i7, but since I would have to change motherboard, don't want anything less than a 4770k and overall would cost me about £350, unless the 8350 is good enough. I don't intend on buying another r9 290 anytime soon (maybe in like a couple of years at least)
 
The problem with switching to Intel is, I then need to buy a new motherboard, which means spending around another £90 to £100, the i5 may only cost £160, but with the motherboard you're looking at around £250+.

What motherboard do you currently own?
Bearing in mind AM3+ is getting no more CPU's, the FX8350 is the best it's getting.

I never see the logic in spending a ton on a GPU, but then not having the foundations to fully power it.

An FX83 and R9 290 will be fine for games, you just won't always get the most out of it.
 
I'm pretty sure getting another 7970 would cause some sort of bottleneck for my cpu. it's sitting on 4.5Ghz atm. Would this be enough to ensure full 99% gpu usage of XF 7970?

Also would a 3770k overclocked be ok with a 7990 + 7970 tri fire without any bottleneck?

just thinking of future upgrades I can make.
 
i5 isn't a fool proof solution for multi-GPU, some games it hits a thread limitation ; BF3.
Pre Mantle, an i5 couldn't max a 7970 Crossfire, post Mantle I have no idea.

And no current CPU will be a catch all for bottlenecks for 3 7970's :p, be it Intel or AMD, an i7 3770K will be one of the best solutions for preventing bottlenecks though.

Cheers. Looking to snap up a 7990 when they go cheap on the MM but think I'd need to nab a 3770k also.

I currently have an asus sabertooth 990fx it's compatible with AM3+
