Bought a Rangemax router but it's not that powerful...

I have bought a DG834PN Netgear Rangemax wireless ADSL router after being told by several people that it was one of the actual wireless routers that would cover the widest range.
That's not what I have found when I installed it. I can barely get a 35% signal in the room next to my computer room, and the rooms are only seperated by a wall and a wardrobe. The other devices I 'm using are USB adapter and a laptop card, both Rangemax.

I can't understand why it's not performing as expected. Is there a particular way it needs to be set up? I've only followed the steps from the Netgear manual. Please help me :(
 
Check there is nothing interfering with it (eg, DECT phones, microwaves) and try moving them around you might get somewhere. Personally I am not a fan of wireless technology.
 
Hitman, I am having the same problems, not getting anymore coverage than I as getting with a cheap router? I have a wireless telephone system, that could be interfering with it? I have tried moving the router about but you can't move it to far from the telephone outlet. Can't get anywhere near the spec, mine will only connect form the kitchen witch is 8 to 10m away and one upstairs bedroom? A waste of money I think.
 
I have replace my cordless phone with a wired one and there are no other devices that emit radio waves. I've moved it around, but still no change.

It's not normal that we are experiencing this problem.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?
 
Hmm, this is concerning... I just bought a Rangemax router and card adapter. ¬_¬

Have you tried updating the firmware and drivers from their website? Are you sure it's running in "Rangemax mode" instead of regular mode, if there is such a thing?
 
The latest issue of PC Pro has a review of some wireless routers and the Netgear RangeMax kit was listed as being over-priced for what it was. All the routers in the test suffered badly from signal dropout but the Belkin was the best overall.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router in my livingroom and can use my laptop upstairs. I have another PC in the cupboard in the hall which can easily stream video to my XBox 360 without dropouts.

Not sure, but there's something set to b & g. Don't know what that is :confused:
 
We've got a DG834G which doesn't have the RangeMax stuff but it works anywhere in the house and we use DECT phones too. Have no issues whatsoever. :confused:
 
Simple to test, turn off the phones for 5 minutes and see if the signal improves ... my money's on that lead lined fettish suit in your wardrobe though ;)
 
Have you tryed using a different channel for the wireless signal? with my trusty old DWL-900+AP i had to play with the channel before i could get any signal in the loft AP is on ground floor.
 
On your wireless NIC, is the aerial standing verticaly? I've found a horizontal position is better.

Leave your PC on for a couple of days, if your router automatically switches channels.

My computer is on 24/7. Apparently the router has several aerials, but all are internal. Is there a way to boost them?

How do you change channel? Apart from the range performance, will it affect anything else (functionability etc..)?
 
log into the router and it should have a wifi settings menu off the top of my head. How did putting them in the same room work out for you ? Any better or worse ?
 
I had similar problems with my netgear router so I decided to put it highup on a shelf for a test and the reception was perfect all over the house and in the workshop which is 20 meters from the house. This working, I then placed it in the loft and it has run 24/7 perfectly since July 2005. Hope this helps.
