Hey i just bought a WD 500gb hdrive and a i5 at 4.4ghz

Ill start the story of what happened and then hopefully you can help me fix it.

1 - My hdrive got delivered before my Motherboard so i thought id try get 1 step ahead and install w7 on my new hdrive, at the time i knew nothing about PCs i just thought it would help me. Then i get told i done it wrong and i wasnt supposed too.

2 - Plugged all new motherboard in, hdrive, dvd drive, everything you can think of i perfected it in made sure it wasnt touching case and all cables were in the slots they needed

3 - Went into MSi bios and set DVD to first boot to hopefully boot the DVD to re write my copy of windows currently on my HDrive, no such luck i just get a black screen with a flashing underscore.

4 - I made a USB stick a bootable windows 7 thing basically so it was on usb not disc, set it to first priority no such luck.

So i just turn PC on, get my screen with gtx 260 at top right, get a blac screen with 99 in top left and A3 in bottom right, then i get the MSi logo then the black screen apears with the flashing underscore which is almost making me take a hammer to my pc :)

Please help me i pray to the skys someone on here knows what to do.

Clear the cmos. Once cleared, choose optimum defaults. Then set boot priority as dvd drive. SAve and exit. Ensure win 7 install disc is in the dvd drive. When booting, watch for any statement such as "press any key to boot from dvd". If you see that statement and fail to press a key, it will look to the next boot device which then depends, assuming it's next, on the state of your hard drive. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

You must also ensure no usb devices are attached whilst attempting the above. Usb devices can, sometimes, cause your boot to fail.

Clearing CMOS is taking the little circle battery out isnt it? Im sure if you do that it auto resets the defaults. Dont get a " pres any key thing" Discs in the drive it reads it at the beggining cause i can hear it start up then just dies down asif it cba

Question: You did install the motherboard and
sata drivers from the msi set up dvd?

I dont think ive used the DISC once, maby once right at the beggining and that was it but it done nothing :S But that was on my old DVD drive which wouldnt work in new motherboard cause its too old. So you think its gunna be If i put the MSi disc in my new dvd drive it will work? Cause the w7 disc dosent get read.

I totally forgot about the disc tbh ;p but i dont think it will make it work tho surely not

The msi disc loads necessary drivers for your motherboard. Bung it in and load drivers. If it gives you an easy install option, use that. It'll probably load lots of crapware but will load the necessary drivers too.

REmove battery. Link jumper. Alternatively, depending on model, there may be a recessed cmos reset switch at the rear of the mobo. Best to manually choose optimum defaults after the reset.

Unless your using RAID you don't normally need the MSI disc during install.

When you set your DVD drive as the boot drive and had the windows disc in, did the drive spin up at all, as usually you need to press any key to continue installing the operating system.

Is there an issue with not being allowed to reinstall with OEM verison or something?

Main reason is the op would have installed the operating system using another pc, with OEM it is tied to the board it was first installed / activated on, so changing the board is classed as a new pc and a new license is required.

Retail allows you to transfer the license to a new system belongs you uninstall from the old system.

Ocuk did stock both sets, Retail does cost more, prices vary.
Also with Retail you can re-sell at a later date.

So awful i dont know what to do and ive had itsince tuesdayh

you need win 7 to install. You should be able using the OEM disk / USB, the activation will fail but the install should work to a point.

Win 7 will ask you to press a key to install RAID drivers, then that's where your MSI disk comes in.

I just did a test with my MSI GD65. At bios, went to "settings, boot" and changed priority to 1. dvd, 2. hdd.

Booted. If no dvd in drive, hdd boots immediately. I.E No "press any key" message.

If DVDS is in drive, "press any key" message definitely appears.

Hopefully like RJC says, you don't need to rely on the MSI disc. But Now the question is "Is the dvd drive working? OR are you setting boot priority correctly?"
