Well hello,im new to the forums but been lurkin since 2006 when i first became a customer!

So heres my dilema.....

I bought an i5 2500 3.3ghz instead of the i5 2500k 3.3ghz because i was in a rush when i placed the order as i wanted it to arrive before xmas and put the wrong one in the cart!( i feel like a total noob-idiot-scatterbrained-moron lol).So when i got it all up and running and tried to overclock it by increasing the multiplier,it was stuck at x38 and i could only get 3.8ghz out of it with the BCLK @ 100mhz.GUTTED! LOL!

Now that its been used only lightly for web browsing and some CSS,im wondering how much i should put it on ebay for? The whole point of me upgrading to i5 was to overclock so i dont want to keep the CPU and i want to get the highest price for it on ebay so i can come back here and buy the 2500K version!

Whats a fair price for it?And if i was to sell it on and provide the reciept from overclockers would the buyer be entitled to the 3 year warranty offered by intel?

(Im not gonna post any links or anything i genuinely just want some advice on how to best minimize my losses from my stupid purchase mistake!)

So the question is,what should i start the bidding at?(Im also an ebay noob lol)

I just saw a thread on here about a guy who somebody attempted to scam a CPU from so i will be taking close up pictures of the CPU with the serial number etc incase the same thing happens to myself!

Cheers for reading and merry xmas to ya all and happy new year when it comes!

Exactly when did you get the CPU? It might still be subject to the DSR so you could send it back and get the 2500K in it's place.

when did you bought it? You may be able to return it under DSR (Distance Selling Regulation). One week after delivery.

EDIT : Ninja'd. But you get the idea. Act quickly and will only incur a small loss (return delivery costs).

Wow quick replies,thanks!

Here is the exact date!

Order Date: 22 Dec, 11, 2:00 pm

I have to admit id feel kinda bad sending it back just because of my own stupidity, wouldn't overclockers lose money from my stupid mistake? I dont think its fair if im being completely honest.

Remember i used it too,so its not in perfect condition the thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink will now be stuck to the CPU and the box is opened :(

At the end of the day you are entitled to do it. Plus you will end up taking the loss yourself. Nice to see some people still have a heart

I've done the same thing when building a couple of PC's for some people, ended up getting the wrong CPU and had opened the box (but not been fitted due to different socket), under the DSR you are able to return it!

Hmmm, well the last 2 posts are kinda making me feel slightly less guilt lol.I guess they could relist it in the clearence/B grade section,i was very carefull with it so the only fault is that the box is opened and the thermal paste will have to be replaced. The only problem i can think of now is that its coming close to new year maybe the postal service wont deliver it from Scotland to England in time? What postal service should i use?And how do i go about sending it back?Should i just post it back with a note or should i phone up and embaress myself?lol

Thanks again for the replies guys!

I assume you bought it from OcUK so follow their procedure for returning items under the DSR.

I suggest you notify them now though you still have a few days:

Under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you have the right to cancel the contract relating to your order at any time up to the end of 7 working days after the goods are delivered. To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give written notice to Overclockers UK by letter, fax or RMA WebNote giving details of the goods ordered and date received. Notification by phone is not acceptable. If you exercise your right of cancellation under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) after the goods have been delivered to you, you will be responsible for returning the goods to Overclockers UK at your own cost. The Distance Selling Regulations (2000) places a duty on you to take reasonable care of the goods once you have exercised your right to cancel. Returned items must be packaged properly and shipped in a plain outer box. Please try to include all internal packaging, cables, manuals, drivers and protective bags, however small. Overclockers UK will refund you within 30 days for any sum that has been paid by you or debited from your credit or debit card for the goods. If after exercising your right under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) you do not return the goods as required, Overclockers UK may charge you a sum not exceeding the direct costs of recovering the goods. When exercising your right to cancel under the Distance Selling Regulations (2000) please return goods to Overclockers UK (Esnet Ltd), 4 Axis, Millenium way, High Carr Business Park, Newcastle-under-lyme, ST5 7UF.

I think with DSR it's a case of as long as you say you want to return it within 7 days of purchasing the product then you have a fair bit longer to actually return it. So I don't think you have to worry about postal service.

Edit: I.e. as above, make sure you communicate your intentions to OcUK ASAP!

You only have to notify OcUK within 7 working days from the day following delivery.

You can send the processor back outside that period as long as you notified them within it.

The procedure you need to go through is in my post above.

Thanks a lot guys!I have just sent an RMA request in the webnote system and will be posting it today!Should i clean the thermal paste off the CPU/heatsink or just the CPU?I told them id pay the extra for the i5 2500K and a bit ontop for the trouble if they feel its appropriate lol.

Cheers Surveyor for posting up the DSR info,it saved me having to look for it on the website!

Yeah clean the thermal paste off dude, I would take it of the heatsink and CPU, should only take you a minute or two if you've got some proper cleaner. Be careful not to get any paste on the pins though!

Can you return used items under DSR? I thought you could only inspect items.

Hmmm,i really hope they can accept it back it was only used for a very short period of time, now i wish id looked at the CPU properly before installing it or preferably bought the right one to begin with!Im dying to play my games!

If the worst comes to the worst and they dont accept it back, how much performance would i be losing out on?I have one of those corsair H50 watercoolers + ASUS P8Z68-V motherboard and wanted to get some proper use out of it not just a slight overclock with the i5 2500 @ 4ghz-4.1ghz.I was reading some of them can get to like 5ghz and over,i was hoping for 4.6ghz or over if possable but would have been happy at 4.6ghz(of course i did wish for a lucky CPU @ 5ghz just to increase me E-peen lol).

Anyway i sent the RMA/DSR request 2 days ago and told them the situation and that it was only used for a short time untill i found out the mistake and that id be willing to pay extra for the loss they incur from my mistake i just hope its not been time wasted cause i've been dying to get an i5 and overclock it for like a year lol.If they were to refuse my request then what should i sell it for on ebay?

Cheers again for all the advice!

Sorry but you can't get price checks outside of the Members Market. If you need to sell it on the auction site just check for closed auctions for the same item and get an idea of prices. I would only sell to someone with 100% feedback in the UK but even then document everything (serial numbers, photos of condition etc).

Hope you can get it sorted without that hassle :)
