bought wrong memory!

I have accidentally bought 4 x 1gb corsair instead of 2 x 2gb sticks. Im using vista, is there any point in exchanging back to 2 x 2gb or will the 4x1 be just fine? I don't really know the advantages or disavantages

How long you had these modules? I would suggest that the performance difference is going to be hardly noticable.

they have just been delivered... unopened. only really want to put them in if its not worth the effort to get swapped and exchanged for the 2x2gb

i think the only disadvantage is that you use all 4 slots with the 4x1 kit

Are you overclocking?
I would imagine that having 4 sticks instead of two, you'd be doubling your chances of having one of the sticks not being able to handle a decent OC.

i wasn't planning on overclocking the memory, just the cpu.

the memory states that "Corsair's line of 4GB memory kits are designed for PCs featuring 64-bit operating systems. Please note: Installing 4GB onto PCs with 32-bit operating systems is not advised since 32-bit operating systems do not support 4GB of system memory."

What does this mean? Initially I was planning to install a 32-bit system

32bit only sees 2.7GB IIRC.

Should see a bit more then that, anything between 3.2 and 3.7Ghz from my experience.

This question gets asked so many times, and their is always multiple answers for it. Go email Microsoft or something to find out how much RAM a 32bit O/S can actully use.

anyone else read this? so a 64 bit os can use all the 4gb of ram then? :confused:

what about 4GB + cos i have a 2x1 kit and a 2x2 kit (not installed yet) just wondering if this will work hehe

I think 64bit can take up to 128gb but we are a long time till we get there.

also i think i heard somewhere that you get details on acquiring 64 bit vista when you purchase 32 bit vista which i hope is true since i got 32 bit :rolleyes:

thanks for the info guys. i am definitely moving to 64-bit, things have improved for 64bit over time and with the ram, i'll keep it.

but i have now noticed that the new motherboard i got too, the asus striker extreme has a QVL list of compatible RAM that is required to guarantee stability. It is imperative that this 'compatible makes' are used? Or is my "4Gb (4x1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18, EPP" gonna be fine?
