I'm wanting to box in an open staircase in the house I've just bought. We are getting new carpet fitted throughout the living room stairs and landing, and this is something we wanted to do eventually. But may as well do it now since we are going to be laying new carpet.

Took a screen grab from zoopla of the staircase. Does anyone know how much it would cost to put risers in between the stairs and also create a small cupboard underneath the stairs too?

Probably about 50-100 quid if you do it yourself. I actually like these type of stair cases, makes the room bigger

We could do with the storage space for ironing board/hoover etc. So it's something we both thought to do when we first seen the house.

I don't mind the open staircase so much. But with now wanting to lay new carpet it would seem the best time to get this job done.

I like that how it is too. I'd perhaps stick a shelf or two under.

As far carpet, you're only talking an extra couple square metres.

You not got any space in the bedroom for ironing? That's where I do mine so can hang clothes up right away.

DIY it will cost peanuts and take a couple of hours. Failing that a joiner/general builder should be able to do it in half a day for £500 or so!

I'd definitely box it as it's dead space that would be better utilised as storage it's not like you can sit under there or anything!

Are you planning on staying there long? you could do something like this

or a great idea would be this to keep shoes in

Alternatively a single access door would give you the storage, but then again putting a small wall up over it may close the room in. Put a curtain up and test it out.

I had a similar layout in a previous house, I was never going to own it long so I didn't bother doing anything. It was always wasted space though. I put the TV under there but that was pretty much my only option.

It's dead space like has been said. Ideally I want it to be boxed up and used as storage. I then want to have the TV put infront of the stairs and turn the sofa around to create more space in the middle of the living room.

Thinking in my Dad should be capable of boxing it in. The only tricky part if there are metal rods in between each stair which will need to be removed?

If you're going to move the TV to that side of the room anyway then try what Adam did with the TV in the corner under the stairs. It might look better than having it right in-front of the foot of the stairs with wires poking out back. The middle of the room will feel more open too.

I've also seen under-stairs area like that used as a computer workstation area which works quite well.

I'm looking at doing exactly the same thing for exactly the same reasons so I'd like to see how you get on with this.

I quite like the first image Kimi has posted with respect to still seeing half the staircase. That might help avoid making the room look smaller, which is more of a problem in my house as the staircase looks like it covers more of the room than yours does.

I would want to box the area in entirely though and have a door rather than the storage options Kimi has posted as they look untidy imo.

I'll only be boxing in under the staircase, leaving the staircase itself exposed

Just need risers inserted in between each stair as well

Is there any kind of building regulations or suchlike that you need to conform to when doing something like this? Or can you do pretty much what you like?
