Boxster vs 911 - who is faster?

Well for me I know I would always want better, just down to how I am.

So if I grabbed a Boxster S, I would no doubt not be happy unless I could get a top end model of Porsche's normal offerings (ruling out a Carrera GT :p).

Exactly the situation I'm in now with the 350z, why didn't I get the 370 or get a gtr on a lease. Fortunately those two options can be easily answered at the present time, insurance.

Whilst Im all for aspirations, this sort of thing is a little silly. You're happy to be seen in a 350Z, not a bad car but certainly not a patch on a Boxster, but you feel having a Boxster would cause you such pain because it wasn't a GT2 RS or GT3 RS? Cutting your nose off to spite your face if you ask me and it's odd that people with loads of real money tend to not worry about such things when Mr 2 up 2 down new BMW every year 1 better than lasts has a strange twinge that sees them worry about driving an incredible motor car that doesn't cost as much as another incredible motor car. Keeping up with the Jones's is a no win game that usually means you miss out on things in my opinion, but we are all different.

I'm on a train, I posted this and it got wifid to death and came out like the above :D

And now I edited it so it makes sense again, blame Branson.

Maybe I'm getting old, but as for which is faster, I just don't care... :o

Which is more fun?

I had a 997 C2S PDK for a few days last week, and genuinely didn't want to keep it.

PCM 3 was nice, I prefer the dash in the 997, and while I'd love to have the money / infrastructure behind me to justify a £60K car, the gearbox felt like it blunted the extra power (though it was a different car in Sport mode) and I was very concious of the extra weight at the rear...

I like not having a roof, & I'm still not sure about the 911 cab...

For ~25k a year my Boxster wouldn't be most people's choice, but it is the first car I've had where I'm not already eyeing up it's replacement, which always used to be the next model up (M3 Vs 330 & Z4M Vs 3.0).

There's a boat load of other cars I'd to have a play with for a few weeks, but from an actual ownership POV, the only thing that tickles my fancy so far is the 981S, and I scored over £70k before I gave up on the configurator.

It's nice in a way, because I finally have something where I can just relax and own/enjoy it for a bit, rather than be constantly think about what's next...

The worst thing about it is the badge...

I'm not a fan of PDK either, it takes something more away from the car than simply the ability to heal toe and I'm not quite sure what, it just seems to mute the car if that makes sense.

Being badly afflicted by white man's rythym, I lack the talent to Heel & Toe anyway, but I completely get what you mean about it muting the car...

I had a 3.4S PDK for the day a couple of weeks ago and felt exactly the sme thing as with the Z4 35i DCT I had a couple for years ago... Better than an auto, not as involving as a manual... Turns a sports car into a GT imo...

I don't dispute that it's objectively better than a manual in being faster/smoother/more economical, but subjectively, the time I'm not spending engaging clutch, changing gear, disengaging clutch, just feels like a frustrating "lag"/delay. It felt like going back to a turbocharged motor, albeit before you learn to drive around it and keep it on boost, which is probably the underlying problem with my experiences with dual-clutch boxes; ie, my lack of talent... :o

Sadly the next GT3 will be PDK only I believe, times, they are a changing

:(

Will that be the first PDK GT 911? or did the GT2 get it already?

I've never driven one, but conceptually, the GT3 RS 4.0 sounds like driving nirvana.

Unfortunately it also sounds like a swansong... :(

Same here, the first hour it's fun and a novelty but without a doubt it makes any car far less involving and your soon longing for a manual. But PDK sport+ is pretty amazing, but for a b-road or track day manual every time, even though I'll probably be slower.

Does anyone in the UK even give a monkeys about 1/4 mile time anyways? This aint a 1950's drag race musical movie.

Drove a Boxster S once and it was brilliant. Was pretty much as fast as my 996. Still, I was always glad to have the keys to it's big brother to go back to after my test drive. I can go on the Porsche site or ebay and spec one up, but i'd always go back looking for similar 911's in the same price range.

It will never be able to shake the fact it's a cheap porsche from a manufacturer that has built it's reputation on marque snobbery ;)

1/4 mile is really important because its a usable statistic.

For instance some cars hit 60mph in 5s, which people belive is quick, but said cars can take 16s on the quarter mile, so in reality not so quick.

In short any car that can do the quarter sub 13s, is a very quick car at everything, especially if its terminal speed is also beyond 100mph.

Its just a more accurate test of a cars true performance through all the gears, but the fact is most of us will probably never do a quarter mile run.

But a car which is doing sub 13s at 100mph+ obviously is not only quick ofr the mark but has plenty of go in the mid-range and top-end too. :)

What if a car is geared for 0-100, or just any use only in a straight line (most stock american cars)

There are plenty of diesels and similarly souped up german barges that will give the likes of yours and my car a nipped arse right up to the ton mark, after which the real power starts to show.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but is the 0-100 really going to show the 335i vs M3 type arguments who is boss, and equally the Boxster vs 991? I mean looking at that video it looks neck and neck but what happens when we get into autobahn speeds (where it counts of course! yes that is a joke).

Are you suggesting I never owned a 335i? :p You've implied this a few times in the last few months, so lets get it off your chest :p

it's only due to the distinct lack of Hovis in the photgraphs. Anyway, you still lived with your folks didn't you, so I'd have really expected nothing less than a M5 :)

Simply because I never did a 'my new car' thread and nobody asked for Hovis in the Show us Your Motors thread, rather than for any more interesting reason.
