Boxter 3.2S or Z4 3.0?

You'd have to be a well off hair dresser to afford a boxster unless it was an old one, even then upkeep ain't going to be cheap.

Z4s are ugly imo. Boxster is a far better car

Great, that doesn't mean "the fact remains that a boxster is a poor mans porsche". That just means that there are idiots out there that are just like you.

This pretty much sums it up in my view. :)

Thank you to those who have given some useful comments on the two cars. I think it is going to take a little more thinking on my part and definitely will go and drive the two.

Am I right in thinking the best place to do this would be at dealers?

Go and drive them, dealers is the best place, however its worth then driving cars back in your price range that are within the area you want to look, this will give you the chance to feel them new and used :]

Me - i would go for the boxster :]

If you can afford the running costs it has to be the Porsche. Different class. It is only a poor mans Porsche to the even poorer people who can't even dream to own a Porsche IMO.

To 99% of the population that is how they are perceived.

90% of the population struggle to tell different cars the same colour apart the other 9% know its a great car for its own merits and theres just the 1% that think they know about cars but don't

If I see a Boxster, I don't think he can't afford a 911, considering its a ~£35k+ car, that would just be stupid. If it was a crappy, tatty boxster, I may think that he pushed that bit too far, but a well kept and good condition boxster looks every bit as expensive as a 911 IMO.

And tbh, 99% of the population will see the Porsche badge and think wow he's loaded, rather than should have got the next model up :s

All this 'poor mans Porsche' stuff is just complete bull **** imho. The Boxter S is supposed to be a great drivers car, esp the latest incarnation in its 296bhp guise

We now have a Z4 3.0 which I had to trek a total of 800 miles to view and then collect. It's an excellent car and I really like it - suprisingly so, given its not my sort of car.

Are you going to do a review on the Z4? My girlfriend is thinking of getting one fairly soon so I'd be interested to hear soe of your thoughts.

Id be after the Porsche myself :). Not sure what TommyB is banging on about but then i dont think many people do.. i see far more Z4's kicking about than i do Boxster's.. No real suprise there as it is the cheaper car.

Tommy.. you're some guy

Expect some depreciation on the porka, facelift 987 is expected with a new DFI engine in '09. I suspect that'll push prices down across the board (to what degree I don't know). 2nd hand porsche market is quite weak at the mo - but I suspect it's a more general problem..

I do hear Porsche are beginning to restrict supply to help maintain residuals tho.

I personally don't like the over-assisted brakes on the Z4, I found toe-healing quite difficult. Not sure about the interior, and steering either - but the Z4 is a lot of car for the $$. Box every time I'm afraid for me. So you're looking at an 03-04 facelift 986s for that money. Personally I'd go for a base 987 but it's just my preference, sorted 986s' can look lush.

Consider a warranty to protect against possible RMS and IMS failures if you for go the porka..

Basic psychology. Porsche cars are interpreted by many as the automatic car choice of the nouveaux riche. This could also be said about BMWs, but it's certainly more the case with Porsches. This gives them a specific image.

For those saying the Boxter is "too easily misinterpreted as a cheap version of the 911," please get a grip. The only reason they exist is so Porsche are able to have a slice of a different market where car prices are lower. I'm not saying they are bad cars, I'm not saying they are cheap cars but they are still targeted at the non-super car market; Not everyone can afford 911s. In the same way, Aston Martin will probably release a cheap car.

It'll be a shame if this happens because Aston have a terrific brand image and produce some of the most stunning and beautiful cars on the road. I personally wouldn't want to see the brand image tarnished by everyone and their dog driving the more affordable, cheaper 'budget' version of the car. But heh, I'm not trying to draw parallels to Porsche here!?
