Boy, 9, returns to school as a girl

A school source said the boy had "always been rather feminine" and a decision had been taken to support the child and family "after his case was confirmed by five doctors".

m & f sexual organs . Or at least enough ambiguity over their sexual status so as to prompt this unusual decision that the parents have taken. Or does it normally take 5 doctors to establish if someone is M or F :)

In all actuality, it may be the best decision for the child to be honest.

Lets put it this way.. if certain feminine physical characteristics are becoming *very* noticeable or rather they will be in a couple of years (with the onset of puberty) then imo its the right thing to do for him to change to a HER.

Not sure why gender re-assignment is not available to under 18s though. I mean in cases where the person/child has both M and F physical characteristics then treatment ASAP imo would be the best thing surely.

Gender characteristics are not fully developed until after puberty, and then there's the issue of informed consent...

I wouldn't support any drastic intervention at this stage myself.

Gobsmacked is what I am. Hard to believe this story, perosnally I would not be happy about this happening at my school. FUBAR.

I think this is ridiculous, a child at that age is far far too young to make any sort of decision whatsoever, whats to stop the kid runnin in next week demandin he wants to be a boy again? Or a teletubby? Parents are so afraid now to tell their kids no its a joke, I have 2 very young brothers and sisters and the little girl already loves pink and things which is great but should she start likin Action Man, football and hangin round with boys by the time she is 9 I will think nothing more of it than a slight phase that will have almost no effect whatsoever other than a proper sense of humour when she is older.

That 'boy' is going to be torn apart in school on a daily basis its the nature of children, I pity the boy, my oldest son is the same age.

Exactly not fully developed yet so it makes sense to do smt about the situation well beforehand. There is no issue of informed consent in this case that is relevant. Could you explain why there is? Bearing in mind this is a child's welfare we are talking about.

some responses on here have been very melodramatic (akin to how papers like the sun/daily mail report on stories.....a somewhat "Yaaa! Booo!" mentality )

Poor child and poor family.

I doubt many people can imagine how upsetting and difficult it must be for them. Instead you get people spitting vitriolic nonsense at them because of their complete ignorance.

Unfortunately it seems there is very little you can do about the bullying - it would happen anywhere. Perhaps the best option would have been to change school?

If you were the parents of this child....would you encourage him or tell him to get a grip :p

I would tell him to go have a shave......
