Brainstorming software (freeware)

I'm just about to start my dissertation and need to get all my thoughts down and organised. Any recommendations on some good mindmap/brainstorm software?

I'd like something nice and simple like Mindnode Pro (downloaded a trial) from Apple but nice and free!
