Just wanted some opinion as to the cost of replacing all 4 brake pipes on a W210 Merc please. I have been quoted £985 at one stealership and £375 at another, for the same work apparently? Also apparently the rear axle has to be removed to feed them to the back 2 wheels? To top it all off they are not ready made and have to be manufactured individual to the car?

I think I am being taken for a ride, hence need some advice guys please. Its not an urgent job, just got picked up on MOT that they were corroding.

I'd take it to a trusted independent. Brake lines aren't particularly specialist, any decent place should be able to do them. The cost of the pipe and ends will be buttons, you're paying for labour. Also, I very much doubt that you need to remove the axle to replace them, they can always be routed another way if needed.

£375 sounds fair if it's dealership labour costs due to the time involved, but £985... o_O

axle isn't so bad, they had to drop the gearbox on my dads 911 to fit his :-\

Ahh so it maybe that they need to move the axle for access, interesting!

Many thanks guys Ill book it in for £375 :)

Brake pipes are a piece of cake to replace but it is labour intensive. The £375 sounds about what I would have expected but I doubt they'll be dropping the rear axle for that price - they probably just route the pipes differently which is a valid thing to do.

Solid brake lines are normally always made up to fit when the need arises - it's a lot more cost effective to have rolls of copper pipe, a box of connectors and a pipe flaring too than it is to have a specific pipe sat in stores that may never need replacing.

Are we just talking about brake hoses here?

I had them changed on my Boxster in March;

50 quid for hoses.
50quid to bleed and replace brake fluid.
1 hours labour.

Even 375 seems expensive to me.

No, he's talking about the solid brake pipes I think. The metal ones that run the length of the car.

Not difficult to make (and as others have said, they normally cut copper pipe to size and make the line on the spot rather than buying a pre made pipe) but can be a pain to replace as quite often exhausts/petrol tanks/axles etc need taking off to get at them.

To do the rears on a 205 GTI properly you have to drop the petrol tank really so I just ran mine through the car instead.
