Hello all. I've got a 1.6 205 GTi and just recently I've been getting a noise when turning in right at low speed usually.

It sounds like brakes do when they squeak, however I'm not applying the brakes when the noise happens, and my brakes rarely squeak when I do actually use them.

Anybody got any ideas?

That's not what I wanted to hear :(

Thought the bearings made a knocking noise when they went?

Nope, that's normally the CV joint in my experience. The wheel bearing is pretty easy to do, the most difficult is undoing the hubnut.

No power steering...

It's only coming from the right front wheel. So am I safe in assuming it's not going to cost the earth to put right?

If you're going to be doing the work yourself, its a fairly easy job. The hub nut is 30/32mm, not sure which. As i said before, its around £30 for a wheel bearing kit.

Check the nearside wheel though, it might actually be that one. Another possibility is the CV joint boot. just have a look underneath for a load of grease :)

I'd check the pads first though. My Stag was doing this. I took the pads out, cleaned the crud off the back, reseated them with new copper grease and the noise went away.
