Hi Guys

Right summers coming and im going to be venturing into the world of " Car Events " ;) So im looking for some decent breakdown cover. I dont travel far away much but i want something there for peice of mind.

What package / company do you suggest

Regards

Sam

I was thinking about this... but then I thought what a waste it was :/ If worst came to the worst you can ring up the likes of the aa on the spot I think and join.

Then I realised that it only cost an extra £30 per year to add breakdown to my insurance cover :)

AA Homestart with Parts & Labour cover. Cost £180 in total but it means if they tow you to a garage they pay £500 towards any work (max 3 claims). Can certainly make keeping your car on the road cheaper and in the Elise it covers the dreaded HGF  :D

Green Flag!

Very affordable. Can't comment on the service, as I drive a Nissan (Which as every one knows never break down :p )

I had AA roadside for about 4 months of my policy then they were kind enough to send a coupon allowing me to upgrade to Roadside relay for only £10, i did it but as for quality of service i havent had to use them yet touchwood :)

AA Option 200 (or Option 200 Plus) highly recommended :)

(avoid the Option 300 & 400 though, Home Start is pointless ;))

for which they charge you a surcharge for as you are making a breakdown call straightaway.

i find it useful to have AA cover as your covered in a friends car etc. :)

Agree, whether you are a driver or passenger, you are covered regardless of situation :)

Speak to your bank, if you have a decent bank account it can be sorted through that. For £5 a month i get a long list of extras ranging from free world wide travel insurance to AA cover.

Its all decent cover too, I get AA homestart and relay cover. That alone makes it worth it. Thats with the Natwest but i know the Halifax do something similar too.

EDIT - beaten too it :D

I get full AA cover from LloydsTSB.

Awesome.

'Hi yes is that the AA? Yea, I've got a 540i Auto and damnit, the auto gearbox has... lunched itself..'

/adds that product to shopping list. It's like.. a warranty!

It is kind of asking to be abused.

"Oh dear my car has just had an expensive failure, never mind I'll get my mate to tow me a few miles into the middle of nowhere and I'll call the AA"

There's bound to be a thousand caveats and get-out clauses in the T&Cs, many of which rendering the policy completely useless right at the moment you need it :p.

I stupidly let my breakdown cover lapse. The one time I required it I had to join at the roadside - £50 surcharge :(.

Lol rac and their discount yeah right,

just sign up in a shopping centre or somewhere i saved 50 quid on our joint renewal :) even with the 10% taken into account,

btw the service is lousy too 3 hours to get to me when i were stuck at 10pm with the little un in the car, explained yes its december and i have a toddler in the car yeah we'll be out as soon as we can, soon as we can being 3 hours later :(

although they dont question too much when you buy a new car at one end of the country break something then want towed 500 miles :)

I've had to use them twice in the past 6 months. Both times, they responded in under half an hour.

The 2nd time, they really went out of their way to help, i am very impressed with the service i have received. But it all depends i guess on when and where you are.

I found green flag to be quick and helpfull in the past. One time the guy had to turn the engine over for half an hour before it would start, nothing much wrong with it though just a very tired car.

I dont have cover at the moment but when I do, I'll be trying these guys out

breakdown cover - £29 - AutoAid (no website) 01277 235500

They operate similar to green flag and delegate the work, the reason its so cheap is you pay up front when you break down then claim back the cost against your Autoaid cover. It was highly recommended and they are unknowns due to not using any advertising. I'll report back when I start the policy and if I have to use them.

Which reminds me Green flag refunded my premium after messing up the admin of my account. I had to use them and they sent someone out even though they could not tell if I was a member ( I was, I had the card, etc) then later apologised and refunded me :) They took half an hour, I was in some exeter country lane

All the members of our family have got RAC cover, its a family policy. The cover is for the person, not the car, so i can use it on my car, my mum's car, or even a mate's car. Not sure how much it costs, but its worth looking into :)
