Breakdown Service?

For about 6 years now, my family has been with the RAC as my brother signed up and it ended up with him, myself and my parents on there too.

Now, he's realised its much cheaper for 2, and his girlfriend isn't on with any breakdown services, so he's converted the membership to be for himself and her.

My Dad is planning to get one to cover the three of us remaining, but I just thought I would ask around here for opinions on good companies? RAC have been swift in the 2 times we have needed them, but was wondering if people are considering AA as better value for money & cheaper now, or any other good outstanding companies?

Thanks :)

My family is mostly with The AA, and they find them to be appalling (yet they stay with them ), I'm with RAC and have always found them to be good. In peak hours sometimes I've had to wait, but then you will for every service.
I only have cover for myself though, and don't know how good their multiple people service is (cost-wise).

The AA took 6 hours to come to me, inside the M25 as well. The RAC took 40 minutes, so I know which I'd choose.

I called the RAC out twice last year and both times they were superb.

Not with them anymore though. Their renewal prices were just stupid (cheaper to sign up as a new customer - nice loyalty bonus there then!) so I went with the breakdown cover my insurer provided.

Having owned Minis for most of my driving life, I have had to call the RAC out on numerous occasions!! They have all been brilliant, especually the guy that didn't know what was wrong but literally said 'I'm staying til I find out', the one that didn't laugh at me when I ran out of fuel, and insisted I hadn't run out of fuel, and two of them that fixed the car but escorted me for a few miles as I was vaguely lost due to having to come of a motorway earlier than expected.

We used the AA for one year as they turned out to be cheaper. I called them out once as my exhaust had started to fall off :/ The AA man ripped the rest of it off, broke it in half so it fit in the boot and told me it would be a 'bit noisy' on the way home :(

Currently I am back with the RAC, my parents pay - as they have got myself and my partner on it for no extra charge - I think they are an all round decent company with great mechanics - I'm a sucker for the uniforms too!!!

It's the best I can afford to drive.

It is to me, what a 997 is to Spie.

I need it on the road and the AA are a threat to that.

Edit:
Mines a 1242

Fair enough :)

But (no offence), my car is a bit more special than yours and I've got no trouble with letting the RAC/AA have a nosey under my bonnet.

Both times, the RAC have spotted the problem (which I've missed) and got me sent on my merry way.

Although me feelings about Rover are less than complimentary. I agree that your car is a lot more special.

But my Dad has to fix what the AA/RAC drag in, and they do some really stupid stuff. Even on simple stuff like a flat battery, easy to run up an £800 bill when there's an ECU in the mix. I'm going to follow his advice and nut any roadside mechanic who goes near the bonnet release.

Gotya :)

I understand where you're coming from, especially with the ECU remark... I know how fragile ECU's are.

I wasn't looking for an argument btw, just going from my personal experience with the RAC. I can accept why you feel so strongly about recovery services though.

I use Green Flag, both times been fairly quick.

Would reccomend them to anyone, as said tho they normally use local garages.

Which isn't always a bad thing.

I am signed up to some weird service through moneysupermarket, it was £32 for 12 months and includes home start AND full relay. The number is a 24 hour freephone one, what more could you want, its a network solution much like green flag and seems to have good reviews looking around the net.

Just go for the cheapest, AA wanted over £100 for the same thing, chances are you will never use it anyway. The only downside to mine is that it covers the car, not me as a person. But any other vehicles i am likely to be driving will be company ones covered by my employers corporate AA service, so its a non issue.

I thought Mercerdes offer 25 years of free roadside recovery or is that just for the first owner?

As I bought a BMW AUC, I just have the BMW recovery which comes with it.

Thats why I cancelled my membership yesterday. I only had the basic cover (will get nationwide recovery this time round) but including my no claims discount it came to £37.99 to sign up as a new member £34.99

I'll swap to someone else and score another £30 or so from quidco :o

There is nothing in the paperwork which i got with the car which mentions it, i guess it must be for the first owner :)
